Sometimes a cookbook comes along and completely surprises you. I confess, I had low expectations for this cookbook. Not because I don't love Food52 or Erin's writing, but because it's difficult to do this kind of "instructive baking for the home cook" well. I've purchased a lot of duds that skewed towards too simple/dumbed down and/or too boring (the world needs only so many recipes for the basic sugar cookie, brownie, yellow cake, etc).Erin's cookbook is everything an informative cookbook needs to be for the home baker. Inside this squat but many-paged tome, Erin has included recipes for a few basics, along with explanations for why they work (like the high ratio cake - aka why commercial bakeries use shortening in their cakes and why you might want to too). Beyond explanations of recipes themselves, this book is stuffed with tips for keeping your brown sugar soft, fixing a broken buttercream, etc as well as lengthy explanations and detailed photos for different pie crust styles, lattice weaves, weighing out crumb crusts for your pan size, etc.The vast majority of Erin's recipes are either a spin on well loved classics or something you're unlikely to find in most/any other baking cookbook. I'm not sure I'll ever try her lemon-licorice meringue pie, but only because I'm not sure I like licorice that much. Her peppermint fluff cupcakes and butterscotch blondies however are going to become a part of my baking rotation.What I like:Clear recipe writingInteresting recipesBeautiful pictures of everythingGreat advice and explanations about why things are done a certain wayWhat I don't like:I wish the book were a little taller, so more of the recipe fit on a single pageWhat I've made:Butterscotch blondiesApricot cream cakePeppermint devil's food high hat cupcakesVerdict:If I had to pick only three dessert cookbooks, this one would make the cut

I love the way this is written and the good tips and ideas. However, this book needed further editing, as there are some mix-ups. At the end of page 15 a new sentence begins -- but it does not continue on page 16 - instead a whole section is on that page. Instead, the sentence (and the rest of the section it goes with) picks up again 2 pages over. The sections of the chapter are simply mixed up. Additionally in the Resources section, the website recommended for buying cookie scoops no longer exists. These are silly mistakes that should have been caught before publication -- especially from as well-known a publishing house as Houghton Mifflin.

I admit I hesitated buying this baking book because I am a baking cookbook junkie with a zillion titles who has been baking since the dinosaurs roamed the planet. Would this book teach me anything new?The answer is: “Hallelujah! Baking Bejeesus! Yes, yes, yes!” I learned new tips just in the introduction...yeah, how is it even possible??!The tone of the author is friendly and she is a thorough and well-informed teacher who explains why baking techniques work, gives the difficulty level for each recipe, throws in pro tips for those who want to take a recipe to the next level and at times suggests variations.All well and good. What about the recipes?Erin’s got that covered too. She provides creative twists on classics, giving you the comfort of familiar treats but adding that extra something special that makes your baked goods stand out and steal the show. For example, I just randomly opened my copy and there is a recipe “ Five-Spice Pumpkin Pie” followed by “Grapefruit Meringue Pie”. And even if you don’t want to stretch your culinary horizons in that new direction, I promise you will learn so much from her about baking that you will end up making better pie even when using your own favorite recipe.Not every recipe has a photo but the ones included are great. The layout of the cookbook is very user-friendly and visually appealing. I love how the quantity, the difficulty level and tips on making a baked good ahead and storing are given in red at the top right of the page for the start of every recipe.If you want to read about other bakers’ experiences using this cookbook, Food52 Baking Cookbook Club on Facebook baked their way through “Fearless Baking” in March 2018. Let’s just say these bakers had amazing photos and high praise for this special cookbook.Categories of recipes include: Cookies & Bars; Cakes; Pies & Tarts; Pastries; Custards & Creams; along with Resources. There is plenty to love. I thought “Sweet” by Ottolenghi would be my top favorite 2018 baking book but “The Fearless Baker” wins hands down❣️

The Fearless Baker is the baking book I have been waiting for. Recipes are inventive and fun; instructions are clear; pictures are beautiful. I really appreciate the author's approach to providing the reason/logic behind how/why the recipes work. Rather than just rote instruction following, I came away with more baking knowledge and now feel more empowered as a novice baker. Most importantly, all the recipes I have made so far have been delicious. I am very impressed by this cookbook, and recommend it for any burgeoning bakers trying to step their game up.

I bought this book after flipping though it in a library and I got it for one reason: grapefruit meringue pie. I am of the firm belief that grapefruit is underrepresented in the world of desserts. The pie was gorgeous, and I’ve since made the doughnuts. I’m new to doughnuts, though not to baking, and her instructions were clear and easy. The recipes contain weights, which is a must for me. Very pleased and excited to try new recipes.

A versatile baking book for both the novice and the expert, it has everything from classic recipes to new ideas that would inspire even the most seasoned baker. What I especially like is the author’s thorough explanation about why certain ingredients behave in specific ways. There is a lot of information in this cookbook. Plus beautiful pictures and clear, eloquent writing make it a gorgeous book to own!

This is an excellent book for readers at all levels with an interest in UWB. Those that are new to this area will find it very comprehensive and clear to understand. On the other hand, researchers very much involved in signal processing will appreciate the very detailed theory and simulations in every section. The chapter structure is logical and flows in an unified manner. Each chapter is properly divided into theory, practical examples in the checkpoints, the most relevant references and Matlab scripts for each graphical representation. In our lab we recommend the book to all the students whose coursework includes projects in UWB communications and positioning.In contrast with other signal processing books that I have used for my research in the past, this book is not just a compilation of theory about a specific field, but rather it provides the reader with valuable suggestions and solutions to the main problem of designing an UWB physical layer. For example, I believe that the description of the PSD for different pulse-based and multiband UWB systems is outstanding. Also, the repercussion of selecting different system parameters on the PSD is very complete. As an example of the philosophy of this book, chapters 8 and 9 are an excellent summary of receiver techniques in all type of environments.The book also offers an exceptional overview of UWB ranging and positioning and MAC design providing a detailed explanation of the core concepts involved.Congratulations to the authors!

I graduated with my PhD dissertation in UWB transceiver design and system optimization. I studied all UWB related books/papers (at least before 2005). This verifies my qualification to review this book.You can find several books on UWB. This book (perhaps the other edited from VT) is like a bible for Physical Layer designers. If you have extra money, buy all of them. But I guess this book is the only one you touch everyday.

As a graduate student, when I started to research UWB in 2004, I disappointedly found that there wasn't any book out there about this relatively new technology. Since UWB was not fully standardized yet, studying progress was bitterly slow based on various papers or documents, which only cover a few aspects of this technique. But things changed when I got this book from our university library. Upon picking it up, I couldn't put it down. It details most of fundamentals of UWB radio, existing channel model, receiver techniques and UWB networks. Moreover the writing style of this book is excellent as well. Each chapter starts with an analysis of existing methods proposed by different researchers. Furthermore, the MATLAB functions introduced within the checkpoints are very helpful to get your hands dirty. Moreover for curious readers, further reading at the end of each chapter will help you explore more.Although several other books on UWB are available now, I have to say that this is the best UWB book for both students and engineers. If you are new to UWB, this book should be your first choice.

First of all, this book explained UWB well as other reviewers described ...The most annoying thing is that more than half of the book are just pure Matlab codes (hey, it is not a book of Matlab). I do not see any reason why these codes should be printed - instead, a CD will be much more preferable.It is a good idea to have some checkpoints. However more than half of the non-Matlab-codes-contents are Matlab-related checkpoints (wow, Matalb again), which is kind of weird.Probably a good book for those who need step-by-step instructions. Highly NOT recommended for those who have a good background in communications (especially those who have experiences converting mathematical formulas into Matlab codes).

The book by Dr. Di Benedetto and Dr. Giancola is probably the best book for people who are working on the PHY design for UWB systems. The Matlab simulation scripts are especially very helpful which makes the book unique when compared with other books available in the market.I believe the book is an extremely useful resource for researchers, especially for M.S. and Ph.D. students doing research on UWB. It may as well be used as an undergraduate or graduate level textbook; the detailed Matlab codes make the book a good candidate for such a purpose that will give the students a jump-start on learning how to simulate digital communication systems.

This is indeed an excellent book both for reference and student text.I got the book as I was worrying about no UWB book for my graduated students. I thought it would be very helpful to one who wanted to know UWB. We translated it into Chinese and had it published in China. As expected, we received a lot of responses from readers. They appreciated the book very much.The book presents basic concepts very clearly. The most important feature we can think of is the "Checkpoints" along with the MATLAB Codes. You would enjoy it immensely when "checking the points", to see the simulation figures coming out on your computer screen!Many thanks to the authors!

I AM A MAN who bought this book as a gift for a female friend who does not have an Amazon account. I read the book because the title caught my eye and because I wanted to determine if the author was on target in terms of defining men, etc. Overall, I think it's a good read, funny, and to the point. I didn't agree with everything because I think the book could have shined a better light on men, but I will agree with one statement that stuck out for me on page 129 under the heading MEN LIE ABOUT LOVE. It's true that men sometimes lie about love. If we tell you that we love you and we act otherwise, then we are probably lying. Have I done this in the past? Not me because I have only loved one woman and I told her that. She knows it. But we men (depending on how full of shit we are) will lie to get some pussy. My advice to all women is that if we act contrary to what we say, something is probably up and we have something (perhaps other girls) on our minds. If we are with you and we get lots of texts during our time together, then something might be up. We don't always think with our hearts, which is why men are said to be from Mars and women are from Venus. This is just my little input.Also, since a lot of women will probably be reading this review I want to tell as many women as possible something important. Please, please, please tell us men what you want. Don't expect us to guess what you want in life and in bed. Tell us what you want. The dilemma for centuries between men and women is that women don't tell us what they want. My girlfriend is the same way and all the women before that. If you want to have sex, then tell us. If you want to go to a certain place, then tell us. If you want us to rock your world, then tell us. As I speak among my male friends their biggest problem with women is that they don't tell us what they want clearly enough and as often enough. If you want to be happy with us, then give us a few hints and tell us exactly what is on your mind. It really frustrates us to keep wondering and guessing.Ok, well this is my review. I am going to give this book to my friend and hope she gets a bang out of it.

I'm embarassed I got this (I think I was drunk), not because of the subject matter but because it's really obvious advice for the most part. Not to say it's not good advice, it's just pretty obvious. If you're an adult who's been out in the dating world you've (hopefully) figured out by yourself most of the advice in this book.... if you're a college-age woman or haven't dated much you might get some good tips. A few references in it definitely make it seem geared for women in their early-20s.Some things the book tells you to do I don't agree with on a moral level, like dating guys even if you KNOW you don't like them and then ghosting them or "putting them on the back-burner" when a better option comes along. I totally agree with the author that some men do this, but I personally don't think that justifies playing around with people's feelings like that. Sure, I agree with dating several guys if you're not exclusive and dating guys you don't normally consider "your type", but I don't agree with intentionally stringing men along when you know it won't go anywhere, using them to make other men jealous, or just ghosting them when they're no longer useful. That's a great way to be a pretty crappy human being, just saying.Now, there is a lot of good advice (if often obvious) and sometimes it helps to "hear it from someone else" because too many women KNOW what they should do and yet don't. Whether reading this book will make them follow through I don't know, I don't think it's that easy. But I'm still giving it 3 stars for laying it out there bluntly.It's a quick read and there's not much depth, and I think more experienced women might be disappointed. Also the advice is strictly for FINDING a relationship - the only advice for those IN a relationship is to dump your guy (the book makes the assumption he's not treating you right), so it's of no use to people in a relationship who want to stay in the relationship. All in all an ok use of $7, I'd be mad if I paid more though.

I WISH I HAD THIS BOOK WHEN I WAS 17!!!! I NEEDED this! I'm now 35 & single and completely jaded by men. This book saved me!

This was such a beautiful book and I enjoyed reading it very much. What a wonderful way to leave a lasting memory of your loved one for future generations to come, in order to know them. It is so important to write these things down while we can. As a healthcare worker myself, I found the advice given spot-on. I know from working with Hospice patients that they do so much better with family involvement, especially in the assisted living and long term facilities. The stories were humorous, entertaining and did leave me in tears a few times. The home photos added throughout the book made it personal and easy to relate to. I would recommend this book to anyone coming to terms with caring for the elderly, anyone interested in creating their own family legacy book or anyone who just wants to curl up on the couch with a good book.

I don’t remember the last book I read that made me cry and laugh out loud! This memoir about a daughter caring for an elderly mother is a jewel. I loved the “life lessons” and “lessons learned” but the stories that compare the author’s childhood to the mother’s caregiving issues are priceless. I cared for my mother until her death and can relate to many of these stories – I wish I’d had this book then. The author shows such love for her mother throughout the book, while sharing the difficulties of caregiving. These stories and the messages contained throughout the book would apply in so many caregiving situations. Plus, it’s just a great read even if you have never served in a caregiving role. Great read!

This is an incredible book! It is a quick read that will make you laugh and cry at the same time. The author gives you a peak behind the curtain of care giving as she takes you through her journey of being her Mom's care giver over a span of 10 years. Sandra exposes the joy and frustration of care giving all the while trying to maintain her mom's dignity and self worth. She even shares that tough decision making process of having to put her Mom in assisted living. This is a very poignant book with the final pages of the book on Lessons Learned being priceless! In this "sandwich generation" that we live in this is a must read book about care giving.

This was such a good book. I loved it. It really hit home with me. My mother is 80 and luckily, healthy and living on her own but this book made me think about what might be in store for us if we are blessed to have her with us as long as Ms Rebie lived. Sandra and her siblings' devotion to their mother was inspiring and a reminder to pay attention to the important things in life. It really moved me. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a short story about family, love and support to a loved one in need. It made me smile, brought tears to my eyes and made me reflect on the journey many people are on in caring for their loved ones. Sandra is a talented writer and storyteller. Sandra Bullock Smith’s memoir describes the journey she and two of her siblings took down the caregiving path with their beloved mother. Sandra shares tips for moving along that path, even when it tends to get “muddy” or “rocky,” for example, when Mom doesn’t want to go to the doctor or take a bath. The author does her best to always treat her mother with respect, even when it isn’t easy or even comfortable (i.e, changing adult diapers or, more respectfully, “disposable panties”).Written in an easy-to-read style, the author knows the importance of humor in our lives and often finds that humor in the role reversal between her and her mom. The memoir takes less than 90 minutes to read cover to cover, so it’s short enough that even the most harried of caregivers (I am a former caregiver) will probably be able to find time to finish it.

Sandra Bullock Smith can relate to you the profound and sometimes piercing experiences of accompanying her beloved mother on a journey through her final years and, eventually, her final days. Recently, I read her inspiring book and had the pleasure of interviewing her for a local publication.Sandra’s book Trading Places: Becoming My Mother’s Mother: A Memoir takes you through Sandra’s experiences as she cared daily for her much-loved but increasingly fragile elderly mother. Sandra encountered shifts in the parent/child relationship that were sometimes predictable and sometimes surprising. Her memoir lets the reader recognize some of the specific challenges she faced while caring for an aging parent, but more powerfully, to also glimpse the depth of understanding that Sandra achieved during this once-in-a-lifetime experience.“I was in the hospital with Mom, trying to relax for a few moments in a nearby waiting room,” Sandra said. “To pass the time, I began jotting down some of the things my Mother often told us as we were growing up—‘You’ve had enough sugar today,’ and ‘Yes, you have to go to the doctor, ’ for example. I call these ‘Mom-isms.’ I ended up with quite a list!” As the years unfolded and Sandra’s mother needed more assistance, Sandra realized many of the ‘Mom-isms’ that Mrs. Bullock had taught her children applied now to concerns she needed to extend to her mother’s care.“Mom had a high tolerance for pain and a low tolerance for fuss,” Sandra recounted. “One of the challenges I faced was getting her to agree to see someone when I knew she needed medical help. Since she’d been so firm with us, I simply reminded her what she had always taught us, and that made things easier in a way.”Realizing that the foundation her Mother had built for her children was also going to be the foundation for her to accept more care was the inspiration for the memoir. “I knew my mother would be more easily able to accept what I had to tell her if I could deliver the message in a familiar, loving way. Her ‘Mom-isms’ helped me do that, and I knew other people could benefit from the things I learned. By saying, ‘But Mom, you always told us that (fill in the blank), it was an easy way for her to understand the many decisions—large and small—that we needed to make together.”Preserving dignity while providing needed care for an elderly person in fragile health can create dilemmas. This approach, along with gentle humor, helped her mother accept the help she needed. “I discovered I had to help my mother understand that she didn’t know what she didn’t know,” explained Sandra. “My mother was so independent, so strong, and so self-sufficient, she just didn’t realize that she had reached the point where she needed help with daily functions.” Sandra called on love and resourcefulness to help her Mother adjust as gently and delicately as possible.In today’s Western society, few of us have the opportunity to be closely associated with care of a parent in final life stages. Sandra’s book reveals the surprising gifts and discoveries she realized as part of that nurturing, caring experience. “Everyone should have to volunteer in a nursing home before they are forty,” Sandra confided. “If we did, we’d be a lot more informed about what we will need before we need it.”Sandra’s book is a balm for those who have had similar experiences. “One person wrote me that she had felt such guilt about whether she had done the right things for her parent until she read my book. She was able to see that my experiences and her were very similar,” Sandra said. “To know this book helped even one person to deal with the powerful experience of this process makes me very grateful.”Especially if you know someone who has struggled or is currently working to care for anyone in fragile condition, this book would be a wonderful gift.
