This was an excellent further elucidation of the theory of Chinese settlement before the time of Columbus in the Americas. Where Menzies books are somewhat marred by his jumping to conclusions, Chiasson carefully leads the reader through his discovery of a Chinese settlement on the Cape Breton Islands. He shares with the reader his step by step elimination of The Usual European Suspects: Portuguese, French, English, etc. for the remains of a extensive ruins on Cape Dauphin. You share his surprise as he comes to the conclusion driven by the evidence that he gatherers that the site could only have been built and maintained for many centuries by the Chinese. I found his pictures of Micmac clothing and designs striking in the extreme. They look identical to ancient Chinese clothing. All in all I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Menzies but wishes for more evidence and less hyperbole or anyone who is generally interested in evidence of pre-columbian or pre-European expeditions to the Americas.

Fabled in Spanish lore, antiquity's seven cities of gold are reputed to have launched the conquistadores on their successful invasions of Mexico and Peru and their materially less successful excursions into the Southwestern (Coronado) and Southeastern (de Soto) United States. In fact, both Coronado and de Soto were reputed to have been in the Arkansas River valley, one on the upper end, the other on the Mississippi end, during the same summer. In other words, the search for these cities was intense, cost a fortune to finance and resulted in the earliest known European exploration of today's lower United States.Columbus was aware of the cities and depicted them on the legend of his first map, prior to his embarking on his initial voyage. They had been long reported by many, all too many voyagers, for them not to be real, thus Spain's remarkable efforts to find them. Were they a focus of Columbus' first and subsequent voyages? No one is talking. But in all of the subsequent exploration of the New World by Russia, Spain, France, England, Portugal, and Holland, these cities, so frequently reported by Norse, Basque and Italian mariners, were never located. Like Atlantis, no one has ever found them. This book is a remarkable bit of history and archaeological sleuthing performed by the author, Paul Chiasson, a Montreal architect, who discovers a long lost ruin on Cape Breton Island, the land of his birth. It is the story of those ruins, how the author researched his findings and told his story in a manner that leaves the reader absolutely intrigued. Yes, the author concludes Cape Breton hosted the seven cities and that the ruins, in seven separate locations on the coast, are the real deal of antiquity. But there is more: The Cities were the result of a Chinese gold rush!Amazingly well done, excellently written and remarkably far reaching in its early civilization revisionist impact, one is left with the feeling that man has inhabited this planet in a technologically advanced way for a very long, long time. Of course, if you think the conclusion is simply poppycock, to bizarre to be given serious consideration, then you will just have spent some fun time reading about a forgotten place that exists whose explanation is still a mystery. Cape Breton Island and Oak Island are awfully close together. Both represent technology unavailable at the time when they were supposed to have been constructed. Hmmmm.......Talk about thinking outside the box! This is a terrific read that will make you think. Excellent, Mr. Chiasson, just excellent.

Easy and a delight to read, Paul Chaisson's The Island of Seven Cities both informed me of the early Chinese in North America and inspired me to read more. Having already read Gavin Menzies 1421 - The Year China Discovered the World and complimented with some background while I was in China on reading Bamber Gascoigne's The Dynasties of China, I can't help but concur the Chinese had every tool, skill and knowledge to have almost conqured the world. Had it not for the Mandarins taking control in the late 1400's and closing China to the world, we'd all be speaking Chinese! Paul Chaisson uncovered an historic miracle of a magnitude yet to recognized on a strategic island off the East coast of Canada. Yes, he'll be chastised by the "experts" as Menzies has, but in the immortal words of Winston Churchill about truth; "...there it is." Great reading, hard to put down, well researched with what must be 30 pages of superb Notes and Bibliography! A must read for anyone intrested in the TRUE story of world history. I'm impressed! BTW: My daughter's courses in World History at the University of Southern California made Chinese history of world discovery as per Menzies' book required reading.

An excellent work accompanied by illustrations that, when compared to views of remote Chinese settlements seen on CCTV, lend authority to what the author defines as what his discovery really was.Since I passed my copy to a forensic anthropologist who is an avid archaeologist, I ordered another copy for my personal library

This book contains various clues as who populated this Island, a great many stories have been passed along for certain. It amazes me that the histories as we are taught in schools does not give the natives of the local area the credit it deserves. However mentions are annotated and the vast cultural differences between the inhabitants and how the perceptions between the tribes or bands see them selves. A lot can be learned from these early inhabitants and their strife for survival amongst a harsh land and the travelers who stopped temporarily before continuing in there journeys. A book filled with clues of it's inhabitants and it's visitors. Excellent read

The book was well researched and the story seems true. Although the discovered site is getting lots of flack, the complainers don't do the work required to disprove the story. The problem seems to be a non archaeologist has done the work, and that's not allowed.

Well researched and yet not tedious to read, in fact very entertaining. I think people who grew up outside Europe are far less biased in their view of History than those entrenched in the ways of the polite recorded History. These others have been subject to the bias of European centred ideas and yet know there is more to it than that. Congratulations Paul and I hope you are well enough to see through the claiming of your Island to its correct place in History.

I watched and rewatched the anime when i was in my teens..10 years later, feeling nostalgic, i decided to start the manga. I just received vol. 1 today. I'm really glad I bought this. It's a wonderful story with a great main character. He's just fantastic in my opinion. I've experienced many, many fictions in many forms...books, comics, manga, movies, tv shows, anime..and Kenshin Himura will always be among my favorite main characters. So powerful yet so kind, softhearted, and humble. A wonderful combination, and quite unique for the decade in which this was written...as well as today. The qualities and attributes Himura displays (after he leaves his title of Batosai), the qualities of goodness, kindness, modesty, patience, and humility combined with his courage, strength, and sense of justice, are excellent qualities for young readers (and older readers) to be exposed to and learn from.

A few years ago, I began to start watching anime, and decided to try manga. Okay, to be honest, it wasn't entirely that way. I had thought of reading manga before as I had thought of watching anime before, but I just didn't know where to start reading first. A relative, who knows my tastes in fiction, and my beliefs, found a manga of a character that I could enjoy watching.*Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story*, or plain-old *Rurouni Kenshin* (or *RuroKen* even more so) for short, is a manga about a wandering swordsman named Himura Kenshin, who rescues a young girl from a fight with a hulking killer who claims to be the legendary “Battousai”, the deadliest of a group of assassins (known as the Hitokiri) who fought during the recent war inaugurating the Meiji era in Japan. The girl, a young heir to the dojo of her father, who was slain in the recent war, is named Kamiya Kaoru. She is grateful, though a tad peeved at Kenshin for his goofy ways. She also is a tad prejudiced against him for his “Rurouni” ways. Rurouni means “wanderer” (though it should be noted that is a fake word that the mangaka - Watsuki-sensei - made up), and that is what Kenshin has done lately. This is not exactly considered respectable. Eventually, the reason is revealed why, when she learns that he is, in fact, the *true* Hitokiri Battousai. In guilt over his past as an assassin, as well as for other reasons, Himura has changed his path, and wanders around, doing good, with his reverse-bladed sword. With this peculiar blade, it is almost impossible to kill someone, which is just how he wants it to be. He can still do so, but prefers to avoid that irrevocable step. Eventually, a lonely and grateful Kaoru invites him to stay with her at her dojo as a boarder. At this point, it should be noted, nothing romantic occurs, he is just her friend. This manga appealed to me for a number of reasons. First of all, it was unique compared to American comics. It was not filled with super-heroes, or some adaptation of a popular book or movie, for instance. In other words, it wasn't the typical “comic-book” fare. It was a historical drama. Granted the “history” was played with, as the author freely admits. That in itself, I will add, was quite refreshing. All too many authors try to pretend their stories are more accurate than they truly are. The author here does the opposite of this, freely admitting the story is largely fabricated. The premise is also interesting to me, as it centers on the adventures of a former warrior in late-19th century Japan who did his best to fight for justice. He also, as we see in later volumes, seeks to atone for his misdeeds and mistakes and struggles with self-worth. As a veteran, I empathize and identify with this character type. The other part I liked was that his philosophy was one I agree with entirely. I freely admit that I enjoy it when the hero of a story shares my beliefs instead of trashing them. In this case, this is not beliefs of a religious nature. The author seems to have studiously left out religion for the most part, and, from what I have heard, when there are some Christian bad guys later on, they are made clear to not be typical Christians, but guys who are misusing their faith. In general, the author, Nobuhiro Watsuki, stays away from political and ideological issues of today. That is not to say that politics or religion are not dealt with, but that they are limited to those issues that the characters would have dealt with and discussed *at the time* when the story takes place. This does take the story into condemning later evils like imperialism beginning to rise.Philosophically, Kenshin is someone who is mostly a pacifist, but *WILL* fight when the need arises. Even then, he will not kill normally, but he will do so if he has no other choice. He just tries to avoid each step of the way, and when he does have to do what he would rather not, he takes no pleasure in doing so.The dynamic for the character is sort of similar to that for Superman in his stories, where there are some bad guys who can pose a physical threat to Big Blue, but it is much more a story of Superman's personal and moral struggles. Here too, few can defeat Kenshin, but there are enough people who are good enough to challenge him to the point that he has to fight hard enough that he risks killing them. It is the personal struggle at heart here that makes the tale so interesting. Most people may not care for the philosophy quite as much as I do, because they might not share it, or might even find it weird and absurd. In our darker and edgier age of movies with guys that freely kill, a highly moralistic and extremely pacifistic character is not welcome to most, but he is to me. I can't recommend this enough. You see, I can sympathize with Kenshin, because I feel the same way for similar reasons. I didn't assassinate folks like the fictional Kenshin (based, as all the characters are, *very loosely* on an actual historical figure) did, but I was affected by a recent war, and I do hate violence, but if it is necessary to be violent, I hate any and all sadistic enjoyment thereof. I am a lot like the character in that regard, though certainly not similar in actual fighting prowess (obviously!).For those who also like insights into the author's thoughts, there are character sketches and tidbits from the author about the work in progress. This is an incredible manga and If really can't recommend it enough.

Out of Print as of writing (may 15th 2018). Fantastic series, Vizbig editions are always a treat with nice quality paper, 1 or 2 chapters in color per book and a nice condensed way to collect some of the longer manga series.Art is clean crisp and easy to follow combat. Fun characters and despite it being about a samurai called "The Man Slayer" this series is family friendly as it isn't gory and is about him redeeming himself by vowing to never take another life and fighting with a reversed blade sword after the atrocities he had seen and committed in the war.I would like to give a special acknowledgment to Seattle Goodwill, who sold it used "good" condition for 11 shipped (not the OoP prices some are asking) and it honestly looks "Like new" as any dmg (maybe a corner isnt 100% straight) is from it merely existing as a book for years. I am extremely happy with my order as they had quick turn around and shipped it out same business day. Would buy from them again :]

I will admit that I saw the anime before I began reading the manga, but the thing I love most about it is the way the history of the war and new era are woven in with a fair amount of accuracy, according to my research, anyway. I found myself falling down the rabbit hole reading about the Tokugawa era and the Boshin War, so that I could better understand the time and references. The mysterious and almost lore-like past of the hero, Kenshin, keeps you interested in discovering how he became the man he was and now, the man he is. The battles he takes on and watching him transform from the peacekeeper to the badass captures your interest, as well. Defending the innocent from the wicked is always entertaining. And of course, as a woman, the development of the relationship between Kenshin and Kaoru plays a part, as well. ;)

Rurouni Kenshin has long been considered a classic Shonen Jump manga and after finally reading this volume I can see why.The story tells the story of Kenshin, a samurai who wanders the countryside in a time where only those who are part of the government are aloud to have a sword. Kenshin' s life is changed when he meets Oro, a young woman who is trying her best to keep her family dojo alive. As a whole volume 1 does a nice job of introducing characters and the world of Kenshin. It has a nice mix of comedy and serious moments. With a nice cast of charming characters. An odd note for the kindle version is in the last chapter, they accidentally added part of the first chapter in it. Which was a bit confusing at first. And a word of caution for those who care, Kenshin does get gory in a few times.

From the Inside Flap

Risk management has been identified as one of the nine content areas for Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. Yet, project risk management remains an area that is often bogged down by inconsistent methods and a sense of general confusion as to what methods should be applied, where, and how. Written to provide a practical understanding of the basics of risk management, Project Risk Management presents an easy-to-implement, practical, and proven risk management methodology for today's project managers and decision makers. Drawing on author Yuri Raydugin's risk management experience in almost two dozen major and mega capital projects, Project Risk Management shows you how to employ a consistent application of risk methods, including probabilistic methods. Dr. Raydugin illustrates existing training materials, models, and tools he has developed over the years to make risk management accessible and easy to execute. Written at an advanced level that doesn't get bogged down by mathematics, Project Risk Management balances technical information with accessible language to simplify the assessment of the uncertainties in a project. Conveniently laid out in four accessible parts, Project Risk Management examines: The Nature of Project Uncertainties The Three Dimensions of Risk Management The Risk Management Organizational Framework and Process Tools to Support the Organizational Framework and Process Risk Workshops, Reviews, and Reporting The Structure of a Project Risk Management Plan Project Execution through Risk Addressing (PETRA Technique) The Role of "Broiler Black Swans" and Unknown Unknowns The Role of Psychological and Organizational Bias The Selection of Engineering Design Options Using Risk Management Addressing Project Uncertainties through Procurement Cost Escalation Modeling Integrated Cost and Schedule Risk Analysis (CSRA) Building and Running Monte Carlo Models Criteria for Cost and Schedule Project Reserves Key Points of a Probabilistic CSRA Report Project Cost Uncertainty and AACE Classes Cost Reserve Drawdown Risk-Based Informed Decision Making Project Risk Management empowers you with the knowledge and skills to conduct effective risk management processes while avoiding the many pitfalls inherent in project management.

From the Back Cover

From the Foreword: "A practical 'recipe book' for the non-expert who is a decision maker or a project team member to understand how to conduct a robust risk management process while avoiding the many pitfalls." —Dr. Bill Gunter, Honorary Nobel Laureate, Alberta Innovates-Technology Futures Praise for Project Risk Management "The paramount importance of risk management for project success is rarely challenged. The preeminent significance of selection and implementation of the most efficient and practical risk methods is often overlooked though. Yuri shares his real-life mega-project risk experience to bridge this alarming gap. This is a fresh look at existing risk standards, practices, and tools from the angle of adequacy and practicality. Project practitioners who are interested in avoiding outdated, fancy, or impractical risk methods, as well as risk 'ritual dances' and other common pitfalls, should read this book." —Alfy Hanna, Senior VP, Mega-projects, SNC-Lavalin "Risk is that four-letter word that haunts those of us who strive year over year to create value from capital infrastructure investments. It is difficult to understand, tough to quantify in simple terms, and even more difficult to boil down into financial dollars, which is what we need to make decisions. But the risks are there, and we can or should do something about them. In his book, Yuri lays out fundamentals, practices, and tools that can take risk from a 'gut-feel reactive approach' to one where it is quantified, actionable, and result-focused. A recommended read for any decision maker or project manager responsible for capital projects where, at any time, labor, technology, people, financial markets, regulations, politics . . . will affect long-term value creation. Choose to be prepared." —Mark Mackay, PEng, VP, Engineering & Construction, TransAlta "Very early in the book, Yuri focuses on an essential enabler of any successful project risk management program—the Project Risk Management Plan. Quite often, this tactical road map is omitted by a project team, as focus is distracted by populating risk registers and implementing complex modeling programs. Yuri rightly provides core insight on both the purpose and content to enable any new or existing project team to develop a solid risk management plan that will serve to guide risk management activities throughout the project's life cycle." —Jason R. Kean, Principal, Project Solutions Inc. "Project Risk Management provides an excellent and highly accessible summary of the key aspects of risk management—this book should be of interest to those both familiar with and new to the field of project risk management." —Dr. Titus Fossgard-Moser, non-technical risk specialist

Great book. Very helpful. Great condition. Fast shipping. Thank you! I needed this for class.

Very useful book to reinforce one topic that has been jeopardizing many capital projects: HSE issues (the author names them as External Packages of Procurement regarding Procurement and Contract Risk Assessment.I just didn't give 5 stars because it lacks some quantitative examples regarding cost-schedule analysis covering HSE.

The ebook is a little bit slower than usual Ebooks

Excellent Book. It could be useful for a general overview of many differen techniques for the risk analysis.Recommended for SHE Managers.

Great Item and Fast shipping and perfectly described. Thanks so much!
