The Construction Alphabet Book (Jerry Pallotta's Alphabet Books), by Jerry Pallotta

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–Pallotta follows the alphabetical formula used in many of his other titles, this time with Bolster's illustrations to showcase different types of construction equipment. Upper- and lowercase letters are paired with brief descriptive paragraphs that explain how pieces of construction equipment–from an aerial lift to a zipper–are used. Some of the machines are used in demolition, some for roads; others to clear land or erect buildings. Treatment is brief. A backhoe, cement mixer, dump truck, jackhammer, and wrecking ball will be more familiar to children than a horizontal borer, knuckleboom loader, mobile rock crusher, quad-axle lowbed, and vactor. The realistic paintings, rich in tones of blue, brown, red, green, and orange, will attract youngsters. Libraries with a high demand for construction-related books should consider adding this appealing title.–Lynn K. From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. This alphabet book spotlights large-scale construction equipment, from "A is for Aerial Lifts" to "Z is for Zipper . . . used to slice asphalt." With three pages left after Z, the book playfully starts over with "A is for Asphalt Reclaimer" through "C is for Compactor" and suggests that children finish the next 23 letters themselves. Pallotta provides more information than most picture books about the topic for this age group, with a typical entry including three or four sentences with an occasional suggestion of the sound a vehicle or tool makes: "crunch, crunch, crunch . . . eng, eng, eng." Sometimes a bit of facetious humor ("Do not use a road cutter to cut your toenails") lightens the tone of the text. The handsome illustrations, which have the look of acrylic paintings, are well composed and precisely delineated. Suitable for primary-graders as well as for preschoolers who have the patience to look carefully for a minute or two before turning the page. Carolyn PhelanCopyright © American Library Association. This book was a gift for my 2 year old's birthday 2 weeks ago. He absolutely loves it. It has been read to him every day since and even with gentle use, it fell apart within a few days. We were even more careful than usual after reading another review about the binding quality, but to no avail. Several pages have completely detached from the binding already. That has never happened to any of our children's books before. It is such a shame. Exceptionally poor quality. I finally had to put it away and now it's in book-limbo. What am I to do with a beloved book that fell apart & would cost a small fortune to have rebound? The content of the book is fabulous. Beautiful illustrations and engaging descriptions.I really hope the quality is improved though. Extremely disappointing.

Finally, I can hold meaningful conversations with my four year old without him having to stoop down to my level!I, and other moms in the neighborhood, used to refer to any big construction vehicle in the vicinity as a bulldozer. The looks of searing disappointment he gave at those times has been etched into my soul. Never again. You should check out the author's other alphabet books. We also have the underwater one and the beetle one, and my son loves all of them.

This is a fantastic book! My 2 year old makes us read it to him every night. It not only teaches the abc's but also the names of construction equipment. Which is a bonus for me because I don't know all of the names. And my little one is always asking what they are called.Illustrations are well done as well .I would definetly recommend this book.

My almost two year old son is obsessed with this book, and it is helping tremendously with his letter recognition. He loves the illustrations, and we love that it doesn't 'dumb down' the information for children. It's really adorable when he asks to see the knucklebone loader by name. He requests this for his bedtime story every night, and we have been very careful not to let him mistreat it. We have had it just over a month (incidentally, just outside of the return window), and it is completely falling apart. All of the center pages have separated from the binding and have fallen out. The only option I see is to put the pages in a binder, which is disappointing- it was a beautiful book- or to buy a new one, which I'd be willing to do, but afraid it would also just fall apart.

A good idea, but not very well executed. A bit too serious, and the choice of vehicles and names is a bit exotic. Probably it would make most sense to a child of a construction worker, living in the 70s.ABC books should feel canonical and comprehensive, like the alphabet itself. This feels a bit like a stretch.

I bought these for my two grandsons for Christmas. This is a beautiful, well-done, engaging book! I wish I had had it for my sons so we could correctly name the various pieces of machinery that we saw around. "Real" books--about real life rather than some Disney cartoon--are a bit hard to find. And just try finding one that isn't dorky or girly about horses! --And that has correct information. I really don't know enough about this subject matter to know for sure that it is all completely on target, but it seems to be written by someone who actually knows. I'm really tired of books that teach children that baby horses are ponies or that horses are for girls. This book would be well enjoyed by either boys OR girls that wanted to know about all these things! YAY!!! Just a fine book. Three of my children do not have children of their own yet--but when they do, a copy of this book will be in each house! Jerry Pallotta--I'm looking for more of your books! Ooh, and I didn't check the illustrator's name--but it's a name I will look for as well.

We have been through several copies of this book. My son, now 9, has autism, and has been obsessed with construction since about the age of 2. He was having difficulty learning his letters, and this book fixes that. He learned the names of all the trucks, then we started pointing out the letters that went with them, eventually moving to asking him to find the letter. By the middle of kindergarten he had tested out on upper and lower case letters! We bought a copy as a farewell gift for his kindergarten teacher. We wrote a letter to the author and illustrator expressing how great this book had been for our son and got an email back from the illustrator thanking us for sharing our son's story. If you have a child who likes big trucks, grab this book for them.

This book has been my boys' (age 5 and 4) favorite for about 3 years. We have read it so many times that it is beginning to come apart. I'm actually going to buy another soon because my boys have literally loved this book to death. There is SO much information in this book. When they were younger I used to just read the first sentence on each page and do the sound effects. Now that they are a bit older I read it all, but I don't really have to since they have most of it memorized because we've read it 100 million times.

To start Pliny the Younger (not to be confused with the elder) lived from 61AD-133AD and was a notable lawyer and administrator in the Roman Empire. He certainly lived through some turbulent times living through the terror of Domitian who killed many leaders of the Stoics. Later after Domitian was assassinated Pliny and his friends Suetonius and Cornelius Tacitus condemned Domitian and vindicated Helvidius Priscus against his charges. He spent a career in various government positions and finally commissioned as the emperor's rep. in Bithynia and Pontus. Anyways this collection has a good introduction explaining the life of Pliny which is an added bonus when reading his letters. The introduction and letters really helps one become acquainted with Pliny the man and value the live he lived nearly 2000 years ago. This collection of letters contains an assortment of intimate personal correspondence with friends on various topics and book ten of this collection contains his correspondence with the Emperor Trajan. Of the more famous letters are the ones he wrote to friend Cornelius Tacitus reminiscing about his uncles and his own experience during the Mt. Vesuvius eruption. His own experience is interesting, discussing as he and his mother left Misenum they were traveling down the road when the massive volcanic cloud engulfed everyone in total darkness (scary stuff). Also of importance is his correspondence with Trajan which highlights some of the early encounters with Christians and Pliny seeking of advice from Trajan on dealing with the issue are worth looking into. Also contained in the correspondence is a treasure trove of interesting examples dealing with the administrative aspects of the Roman Empire which are quite fascinating also. In his letters to Trajan, it seems that Pliny had an admiration of the Emperor Trajan and vice-versa which is an interesting dynamic to their correspondence readers should pay attention to.His correspondence with his friends is an illuminating aspect on the life of Pliny that helps develop the humanization and respect for our Roman ancestors that one should get through historical enquiry. Take for instance his letter to Cornelius Tacitus (book 1, #6). It's apparent that he wasn't a great hunter and would rather write (he was a good writer). However this time out he was able to kill three boars without changing his "lazy holiday habits," joking to his good friend about it. I find such exchanges thousands of years ago captivating, showing the human side to these important historical figures. The Letters of the Younger Pliny are a good source to look into during this period of Roman history to see the dangers and excitement in which these people lived (there certainly was a lot of it). Definitely recommended to those who are interested in looking into our ancient past.

I would recommend this book for anyone looking to study Roman history. These are late 1st century/ very early 2nd century letters written by eyewitnesses evidencing social and political Roman history, including the criminality of the first century Christian movement. The letters have a personal component to them alotting a more in-depth perspective. Cleanly translated to English. Pictures attached.

Classical writings are the core of any great Liberal Arts education. Pliny the Younger’s Letters provide glimpses into the Pax Romana. From the eruption of Mount Vesuvius to his correspondence with Emperor Trajan, these letters are a treasure.

I'm really enjoying this. Bright, newsy letters. Generally social in content, sometimes describing serious issues like an important trial, but not grimly. Mostly letters between Pliny and his friends, though the last chapter is letters he wrote to the emperor. I will read this book more than once. Excellent quality of writing.

These letters are a window into Roman life aroound 100 AD. I was amazed at how contemporary Pliny's ideas and attitudes seem. And a contemporary lawyer would have no trouble understanding the work he did. At the same time, the way he lived was very different from the way we live. Even very wealthy people now get along with few, if any, household staff and no slaves, at least in this country (the US). Pliny had lots of both.

I purchased this book mainly for Pliny's two letters describing the volcanic eruption that destroyed Pompeii, which are the only surviving first hand account of the eruption. But I also learned a lot about Roman life and politics from reading the other letters. This wonderful book gives you insights into life in the early Roman Empire that you won't get from modern histories. How fortunate this book survived for nearly 2,000 years.

Pliny's letters are simply a delight. In this world of instant communication we forget the vast distances letters had to travel in the past and therefore the care that their authors put into writing them. Pliny is no exception to the rule, his letters are teeming with light and a love of life and contemplation. But if nothing else he gives us a window on an age that peaks the imagination like few others.
