Review

"Lakoff single-handedly convinced liberals of the importance of language in winning political battles. Now he's back to finish what he started."--Markos Moulitsas, founder and publisher, Daily Kos"The All New Don't Think of an Elephant! is an indispensable tool for progressives―packed with new thinking on framing issues that are hotly debated right now, and new insights on how to reclaim the political debate on meaningful terms that can yield true progress, not just political gains."--Jennifer M. Granholm, former governor of Michigan"When the original Don't Think of an Elephant! came out in2004, Lakoff showed us that progressive Democrats voted on values, not issues―just like the right. Now, Dr. Lakoff is back to prevent a relapse of bad framing. The ALL NEW Don't Think of an Elephant! is a must read, every bit as important as the first edition. This time we have to train ourselves to think for the long term. Buy this book, memorize it, and teach it to your children. Progressives may be smart, but we don't communicate our ideas well. This book is the blueprint for how to do better."--Howard Dean, former chair of the Democratic National Committee and founder of Democracy for America

About the Author

George Lakoff is the country’s leading expert on the framing of political discourse and one of the world’s most renowned linguists and cognitive scientists. He is the author of numerous books on politics–including Don’t Think of an Elephant!, The Political Mind, Moral Politics, Thinking Points, The Little Blue Book (with Elisabeth Wehling), and Whose Freedom?–as well as numerous books on language and the mind.  Lakoff has consulted with the leaders of hundreds of advocacy groups on framing issues, lectured to large audiences across the country, run dozens of workshops for activists, spoken regularly on radio talk shows and TV shows, addressed the policy retreats and the caucuses for both the Senate and the House Democrats, consulted with progressive pollsters and advertising agencies, and been interviewed at length in the public media, and he continues to do extensive research on the framing of public discourse. Currently Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science and Linguistics at the University of California at Berkeley, Lakoff is a founder of the fields of cognitive science and cognitive linguistics, has previously taught at Harvard and the University of Michigan, and was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford. This is a good book that could have been great. It features a strong opening section in which Lakoff explicates on his basic concept of frames and how they relate to the brain's structure and functioning. Keeping a laser focus on that concept would have yielded a shorter book but one that's better than this one. Unfortunately, after a terrific start, Lakoff spends the final third of the book mostly riffing about policy issues themselves, rather than about how to frame them effectively. At this point, the book reads like an audition for gig as a pundit at the Washington Post instead of a primer on communicating effectively. And there's an awful lot of filler. (You can tell an author's padding when he unnecessarily resorts to lists. Lakoff has lots and lots of them, none helpful.)If you're interested in the field of political communication, this book is a must-read in spite of its shortcomings. But for me it was difficult to not think of the book that it shoulda, coulda, woulda been with much more focus and a few more real world examples.

About half way through reading, but this is a keeper. We have constant discussions about "why can't the other side see the truth" and "why don't they hear facts and believe them". This book explains it all. I'm hoping that the end will give examples of how to respond to specific questions/topics. This topic is one no one knows or talks about but it is present in everyday political and religious conversations. If someone asked for one reason why they should read, I guess my reply would be that you need to understand that your brain cannot understand a topic unless it has been previously introduced - we do this with 'frames' and this book will explain why people of different political beliefs differ so much

I like Lakoff’s cognitive approach and book-ending answers to conversing with slogan-laden so-called conservatives who beat up progressive and longtime tried and true American values with government by corporate power$. Many on both sides share these values, but that is obscured by past 3 years of jingoistic jousting.HavingRead the book, The Family, as I did: it traces how today’s government fulfills plans set in motion early in 20th century, Lakoff’s is a modern updated book with tips for undoing the work of all those decades-secret agendas for a different America, never envisioned in our important documents. Read, as I did, hundreds of original documents. Textbooks are published to sell, and wow! They are now simply deleting historical facts to sell to the audience which wants our nation’s past revamped.

Mr. Lakoff's book is a primer on talking to people on the right in a way that will more likely create understanding.Mr. Lakoff makes a cogent case that the primary issue is the way in which an issue is "framed." When we start to argue our point using the terminology of our opponent. it's giving your opponent the home field advantage. Not only have we assured we will lose the argument, we also practically assure that we will never find a meeting of the minds. We need to begin from a standpoint of shared values. The current antagonism between progressives and the right has a life of its own, and can poison any discussion from its beginning. This book offers positive ways to approach that problem. The final and most useful section is "How to respond to Conservatives." It offers many good guidelines. There are so many suggestions, I read that section several times to take it all in.Even though I avoid debates because of the anger they inevitably create, after reading the last chapter, I almost felt like seeking out a conservative to try to have a positive dialogue, and now I feel far more ready whenever that kind of conversation comes up.

I read the original and am enjoying the updated version. However, I made the mistake of ordering the audio version too. The person who reads it sounds like he doesn't understand what he is reading. It is very annoying and you can't get your money back.

This book is a must read for anyone who wonders why Democrats, Liberals, Progressives, etc. keep losing elections in spite of being the majority of the voters. Lackoff is masterful in explaining how our subconscious brains work and take the "frames" of the right wing and incorporate them into our own thinking. He expertly explains the difference in the Conservative Strong Father model and the Liberal Two Parent Egalitarian model. The strong father model is reinforced in families that practice most religions and it is reinforced in military service. Liberals have very little reinforcement of their two parent egalitarian model other than in liberal universities. I have a much clearer understanding of my culture now and I also learned a lot about how to frame my own values, rather than repeating the Fox News frames that are heard by most people, most often."

I am a communications graduate and I love the field, especially within communication theories, rhetoric, and connecting it to society. My professor has mentioned George Lakoff throughout my study and when I graduated my bachelors and went into my masters, I wanted to know more. The first book I bought was this one. This book made me realize so many things about American society and how we can overcome difficult times by using communications. It was fascinating to read plans that Democrats, or Republicans, can take to mold this place differently. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and even if you disagree with his views, you can still take away the ideas.

I wish he talked more about scholarship, and less about celebrities, we as a people have more to contribute....I just wished he spoke or even debated more issue with his intellectual likes..

This book has a very broad range African American perspective especially of those who were brought up in religious American. It even perspective that most have been trying to say but didn't have words for. It exposes some behind the scenes black organizations from back in the day that has hurt the community as well a lot that is a direct product of slavery.

Shipped quickly as expected without disappointment. As a writer, Michael does an excellent job of summarizing the view of most black men during this era. No two stories are ever "exactly" alike, but many can relate to the issues better after understanding how he makes sense of many contemporary concerns for young black men.

It was a good book but you need to keep a dictionary next to you while reading because Michael has a extensive vocabulary and he uses it throughout the book

No one can say it like Michael Eric Dyson can say it. I appreciate his frankness and openness. He has a lot to say and he says it with great expression using a marvelous vocabulary.

Love anything by Michael Eric Dyson!

When all is said and done, living under the umbrella of a racist society takes a depressing toll on and is inevitably unsettling to us all. Judging by Michael Eric Dyson's Reader, it seems that the most psychic damage is done to the "so-called" black intellectual than to anyone else in our society. It is a truism seldom expressed openly that since Freud, there are no more secrets: everything is transparent. Every hustler's hold card can now be peeked at.Whites, hustling American society have no choice but to live out their lives retreating from the only thing that gives them a sense of meaning and identity, their only rallying cry to group solidarity: the long dark self-defining shadow of white supremacy. They have nowhere to hide; it defines them; it is the only (inner or outer) garment they have. It is who they are. It defines the parameters of their humanity. They are condemned to defend its evils whether they want to or not: forever trying to innocently (and with great detachment and no sense of taint) explain why it happened; ever wishing and hoping that no one looks at all the tangible and intangible perks, advantages, prerogatives and privileges they still accrue from it. And pretending not to remember that this unmitigated evil of inhumanity remains the gravity that controls the American cultural universe. From an early age, the indispensable life skill for whites (even today, as it was at the founding of this nation), is forgetting that everything meaningful they value and believe in has already been fatally compromised and corrupted by, or remains inextricably tied to a six hundred-year culture of racism.Whites must learn at an early age to deny (or worse yet, how to be content living with) the fact that beyond racism, there is nothing else to "being white." Through racism, whites have raped their own humanity from the inside out: Nothing meaningful is left but excuses, bombast, false claims and the elevation and objectification of superiority by fiat. In the end, it is all so much smoke and mirrors. Racism has made American humanity a smoldering dessert. Only the outer shell of humane existence remains. Look at what happened in New Orleans with hurricane Katrina? Why can't black intellectuals like Dyson and Cornel West come out and say this, straight up? Why are they always pussyfooting around the edges, teasing us; pretending that they want to be us; want to represent us. They want to be everything to us: They are all preachers, rappers, graduates of the "hood," etc. ad infinitum. [Freud would have a lot to say about all this internal confusion of our black intellectuals.]I'll tell you why they cannot say it, because for blacks, the existential reality (and crisis) of living under the shadow of racism is even more complicated than for whites. We must, one and all, live out the duality W.E.B. du Bois warned us about; inevitably coming to realize and then eventually admitting to ourselves that we are both the "subjects" and "objects" of this "intentional man made American" evil. The largest problem for blacks at all rungs of the class ladder (from Dyson's jailed brother to his own life in the ivory league towers) is coming to grips with the fact that being "in" America is not quite the same as being "of" America. And that quite frankly, there has yet to be worked out a formula for finally resolving this national existential dilemma. Those at the bottom of that socio-economic ladder seem to have less of a problem accepting and then living with this reality. They know somehow through societal osmosis that most of America is a carefully orchestrated sham. There is no melting pot. America's puffed up and false claims about democracy, equality and freedom, etc. whether viewed in Dyson's terms of context, subtext, and pretext; or whether just intuited from everyday experiences on the streets are little more than expressions of white internal and personal weaknesses projected onto the larger national screen.Poor blacks surrender to this racist reality because they accept the fact that they are just too weak to do otherwise. They don't get caught up in believing in any white nonsense or fantasizing about their own personal relationship to it; they just deal with it as best they can and go on trying to carve out a meaningful life. However, for Black intellectuals and the black upper classes more generally, it is quite a more complicated matter. Even though they too must realize at some level that they will forever only be "in" and not "of" America, they are nevertheless desperately rehearsing for the day they will become full members in good standing in the great white hero system. This yearning is palpable and is a very ugly spectacle.Pretending to forget that it cannot be done (at least not without the self-defeating result of advancing the causes of racism: look at Condoleeza Rice and Clarence Thomas for example). These intellectuals forge ahead nevertheless, reciting their bios and singing out their resumes and curriculum vitas as they go, so that whites can clearly distinguish them from "those other blacks."They are ever engaging in pseudo and meaningless debates on abstract ideas of democracy and political theory; engaging in literary criticism and matters of letters and the arts; serving as high officials in and consultants to the government and industry; and otherwise acting as if they were "under" rather than "outside" the great white tent. They do this only to prove to whites and to themselves that they are worthy of being dubbed "honorary whites," if only during the day.The deeper they find themselves trapped in the belly of this self-annihilating existential beast, the more denial is required of them.Michael Eric Dyson follows to a tee the well-worn script of the well-paid black intellectual, in residence. Intellectually he is the real deal: He is bright articulate, well read and OVER-understands the America of which he speaks. But he too is intellectually and culturally, conflicted (and need I say compromised; that is bought and paid for). The result is a confusing kind of self-censorship. Like his conflicted mentor and intellectual hero Cornel West, Dyson knows where the waters edge is and knows when and how to pull his punches. Although these essays are VERY GOOD they are nothing if not a study in "how to pull ones intellectual punches."He doesn't want to "speak power to racism;" so much as to "go on tour with it." Like "three card monty," racism is the only real game in town and the name of the game if you are "the token" in the ivory towers of the university is to milk that cow man, milk it; don't unveil it; don't help destroy it; don't fight it; don't make the white power structure too uncomfortable with it; just milk it.Say anything you like so long as you don't shake the money tree too hard. Don't say "white racism;" say racism. Admit that there was racism in the past but only progress today. Be politically correct: there is no difference between racism and all of the other "isms." Put them all into the same bag. Stay on the abstract plane, don't get to specific and everything will be all right. The black masses won't know the difference anyway --especially if you continue to preach, rap, swagger and praise Jesus and some black woman for all of your success. If you do this all will be right with the world. And don't forget, if your rhetoric allows whites to sleep at night, to continue enjoying their ill-gotten gains with equanimity, you too might yet get your ticket punched and who knows, you might even end up permanently under the tent of the "Great White Hero System" yourself.Five stars.

Yes! So scholarly and witty in parts.

Good history of traditions.

This is a wonderful book with hard to find translations. If you want to deepen your understanding of China this is a great book.

I needed this book for a class. The cover had a little crease on it but everything else was in great condition, exceeding my expectations! It was worth the price!

I am a native Chinese and I am a political science major student in a relatively prestigious school. I have been knowing Chinese history for years, with living in China and study Chinese history in my high school. HOWEVER, this book is truly amazing and revealed many things and insights about my own cultural roots. A must read!Highly recommended!

the book content is great and detailed, yet it is not as new as I expected, still, I am really satisfied with the price and the quality!

An amazing resource for Chinese history in a beautiful layout. I would definitely recommend this and the 2nd volume to anyone interested in diving into primary Chinese source material.

Bought it for a college course and surprise (!) ended up reading it! It can be a bit dry of course, but its a pretty interesting read if you're into that kind of stuff. If you have no interest in history well then obviously this book is not for you. Also it is HUGE. I definitely did not read the entire textbook. At whatever price you are paying for this book, the price per page is less than a penny. It weighs about 5 pounds and is fatter than a two cheeeseburgers stacked on top of each other.Still, decent read, heavy, and if you can get it for under 10 dollars you are probably getting a good deal.

The book is quite boring. I only got it because of a requirement for a Chinese history class. Full of ideologies from great Chinese philosophers.
