Whether a situation is only the imagination of Alexa Aston or is an actual historical fact, the event is realistically depicted in every way. I am always pulled into her colorfully described stories featuring courageous heroes and spirited heroines. The second book in the King's Cousins series certainly has a wonderful romantic couple, and though they have lived through some unfortunate events, neither has given up and has continued to do their best. When characters prevail over what life throws at them with dogged determination, I admire their strong-willed resolve. THE HEIR is a historical story filled with intrigue and a wide range of heartfelt emotions. When his father was killed for committing treason against the ruler of England, Landon de Blays was befriended by Prince Edward, his cousin and future king. This led to him eventually becoming a knight who dutifully served his relative. Landon’s actions during a fierce confrontation with the French resulted in him being gifted a title and estate plus also the chance to wed the woman who currently resides at his new home. Cassiana Campion has been in charge of Briarwood since her father was injured, and now that he has died along with all her brothers, she knew her only option would be having to move away. Upon learning Landon will be the next earl and her husband, she wonders how much her life will change.Unfortunately, Landon and Cassiana have to face multiple issues in their relationship, and these trials will test them on quite a few occasions. They often oppose one another because of her wish to be seen as a capable person, while he wants to prove his devotion to England because of his father’s betrayal. There are clashes in THE HEIR, some on the battlefield and others taking place at Briarwood, and whether these conflicts are with swords or words, every detail and reaction seems genuinely convincing. With factual information scattered throughout various situations, especially several of the battles, it had me thinking about the possibly of the incidents in the book really occurring. Much emotion is conveyed by Landon and Cassiana, and I was profoundly moved at times by how they responded to each other. The next book in the series looks to be just as enthralling as the previous two, and I know Alexa Aston will made the story another rewarding read.

This author is fast becoming a favorite of mine and I've already ordered The Bastard, the next of the series. You are pulled into their story from the first page and she holds you there until the end. There are so many twists and surprises that I couldn't get over the journey this author took me on. The H/h are strong, caring and loyal. There are misunderstandings, but they are corrected quickly. That is a theme I've noticed with this author. I can't stand where the misunderstanding or lack of communication is what the whole story is based on. This author writes with substance and I have not being disappointed in how she weaves a story. We have more than one villain to keep the story changing directions. Just when I thought I knew what they would do, boom, no the author would throw a curve ball. Never a dull and slow pace in her story telling. We have lovemaking, outside of marriage and mildly described - maybe 2.5-3 out of 5. Because I cared for them as a couple, it was filled with passion and doesn't go on and on.We have no cheating, no cliffhanger, amazing rough journey to reach HEA , with a delightful epilogue that was like a cherry on top of a sundae.I can't improve on the blurb so not trying. Just can't wait to see what happens in the telling of the 1/2 brother. (ljb)

The Heir starts with Adelard de Blays committing treason and his two sons and daughter suffer the consequences. Their title and land is stripped and they’re exiled. The second book starts with Landon de Blays being rescued by Prince Edward and raised alongside his cousin, the future King Edward lll. He’s hoping to be rewarded for his service and heroism with a title and the estate he longs for. When the Earl of Briargate’s dies and his heir dies in battle with King Edward the king grants the title and lands of Briargate to Landon to protect his Scottish boarders with the order he marry the remaining daughter Cassiana Champion. Cassiana has raised five brothers after her mother dies and now she has only one brother left, but he’s away fight the king’s war. Before he left she asked him to find her husband she can respect. When Landon de Blays arrives at Briargate Cassiana she’s at first wary of the new Earl until she finds out she’s to be his new Countess by direct order of King Edward. She is thankful she will be staying at her home she was so afraid she was going to have to leave the home she loves when she married. Cassiana and Landon have an instant attraction and they both realize she has a lot to teach him about running a large estate. A captivating story I know you’ll enjoy. This my honest opinion and review after I read the book.

Placed in an unimaginable hell by the acts of his father, Landon was fortunately that his cousin took him under his wing. Raised with the Prince of Wales, Landon has always sworn his loyalty to him and is rewarded by the acquisition of Briargate and a bride. Cassiana has been the sole support of her father, to the extent of conducting any all business for the keep. Having been betrayed by someone she thought loved her, she has resigned herself to a life of solitude. Upon the death of her father and the knowledge of the death of her brother, she understands the King’s order and has no objections. As she and Landon become acquainted and are happy to wed, fate steps in.The second book of this series continues the stories of the three de Blays children. The third book can’t be released soon enough!

#41,513 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I enjoyed the book because, as good writers do, Rick in many ways transported me back to my own experiences -- in this case my own raising in Birmingham. Although I was a little better off -- not much, but a little better -- I recognized in this book my own kindred chip-on-my-shoulder drive to make good, and to reward my own parents for faithfully struggling to give me the opportunities they never had. So I think that what makes Rick's writing great, at least for me, is that he says so well what all of us would like to say and do as we look back and appreciate our parents. He perfectly captures why I and so many other Alabama men find no insult in being called a "momma's boy," at least those of us who had mothers like Rick's. I only wish that I had Rick's ability to write my own tribute to my mother good enough to publish for all the world to see. Of course, Rick, as I'm sure you know, the best present you ever gave your mother was not the house, but this book.

There are so many of us who have been transplanted from the North to the South. Few, if any of us understand the new culture that we attempt to adopt. Rather many of us try to reform it so it closer resembles what we left behind. This story explains that culture so well that it helps those of us who are transplants want to accept more than change our new homes. Plus, as a mother, I really appreciated the author's devotion to his mother. Enlightening read!

I can feel the hot sun. I can feel the ice cold springs. I can feel the speed of the car, motorcycle or vehicle blow my hair. I can smell the sweat of hard work and taste the fresh tomatoes. I live in the South near Jacksonville, FL where this author went to school. Being born in 1947 in the South means you lived through segregation, voting issues, school and lunchroom sitdowns if you survived the nuclear bomb in your personal bomb shelter. Rick Bragg personifies all five senses of the era, the language (likker is one of my favorites), plus touch, mental, and physical. I lived with black and white tvs and rabbit ears and even little tubes that a neighbor could fix. I remember my grandparents getting an "indoor" bathroom. This book is a memory massage that melted my soul. Thanks to Rick Bragg. Keep on telling it like it is.

What took me so long? I've been following Rick Bragg in Southern Living Magazine for years. Truthfully, for quite awhile now its the only thing I read in the magazine. My husband knew I was a fan of his so he bought me his latest book for Christmas and I read it from front to back in a sitting. So, I finally went hunting for more and found this on my Kindle. Again, I read this from beginning to end but not in one sitting. I wanted to stretch it out. To make it last. I cried and laughed and cried again. In the end I felt it was the most beautiful love letter to a Mother I have ever read. He may not have meant for it to be only that because it seemed it was also a love letter to his big brother. Yes, maybe, just maybe, his Dad. I hope my children feel the same way about me. In the end, that's all that really counts. Isn't it?

If you haven’t read Rick Bragg, what are you waiting for? There are few writers today who can turn as beautiful a phrase, capture a reader’s imagination, or bring back images of an earlier life like Bragg does. Yet he is commonplace and earthy, his writing carries a twang, and his opinions, mostly about the superiority of Southern life, are rampant. It’s clear he doesn’t much appreciate effete Northerners who have never eaten grits. He’s a Southern boy.I suspect he is a true redneck, as we traditionally understand it. But the cornpone dissolves into singing prose when he settles in to inscribe his magic words. “All Over but the Shoutin’” is his runaway best selling memoir, published in 1997, and winner of innumerable awards and high praise from both readers and literary critics. It will both exhilarate you and leave you in a sobbing heap, sometimes at the same time. It’s the story of his childhood in Alabama and his meandering journey to becoming a legendary journalist. It’s filled with stories about things and people that influenced his life. Mostly it’s a love song about his mother who raised Bragg and his two brothers without a father. The book started him on the road to fame and is his best seller. His mother, still living, is the lifeline he unapologetically clings to. Best not chide him for it unless you want your butt kicked.Bragg has been a lot of places and seen a lot of things in his career. Most of his recollections wear heavily on him. He recounts them with clarity and neither turns away from the horrific nor fails to express the misery that hurts his heart. He is a man with a compassionate soul who’s unafraid to share his feelings. But it is the poetic beauty of his love and determination to honor his mother that propels this book. Her entire life has been filled with heartache, grinding poverty, three boys who constantly bedevil her, crippling insecurity, and constant sorrow. Bragg recognizes his contribution to her misery, but has always wanted to set it straight, and expresses his frustration with his inability to make her life warmer as she ages. His words rings like a bell. There were times when I laughed and others when a stray tear wet my cheek. Many times I simply caught myself staring at the wall absorbing some moving passage, my finger stuck in the book so I wouldn’t lose my place.Don’t miss this book. It’s a classic memoir with all the elements that are sure to soften even the most callous mind-set. It’s not a tearjerker. It’s a bright light that illuminates glorious writing, a light so bright it makes your eyes water.Schuyler T WallaceAuthor of TIN LIZARD TALES

OMG everyone should read this book if you are into Americana, rags-to-riches, love of family. Couldn't put it down and finished in 2 days. Mailed it to my best friend who also loved it. It will make you laugh and cry--really. Rick Bragg is a gifted writer, and I appreciate his way of thinking, and descriptive prose. God bless him and his wonderful mom, who sacrificed much.
