#2,429 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I have just finished the 6th book in the series, so I'm just going to shortly review it as a whole. The writing is good, and I enjoyed the story, audible quality was also good. There is obvious that the writer has military experience, as the atmosphere he creates puts you directly there, on the frontlines.Now, why I am giving only 4 stars, is because it always takes too long to get to the action, and from one point to another. There is too much descriptive content, and even if it gives you a better view of the world around, I could easily do without maybe 30% of content. I would like to see a more fast paced content in the next iteration of the series, and also find out more about the aliens. There were years since the 1st contact, and still too little is being known about them.The series starts from the beginning of a military career and the main hero goes slowly up the ladder. He's not your usual main character around which the fate of the humanity revolves, but instead we're given the recount through the eyes of a survivor of certain key events, and this is a nice change. Oh and yea, the hero always looses his rifle...This being said, I'm looking forward to the next book!

OK story, but there are enough things wrong in book that will make me hesitate to read the next one. First off is how the author portrays the world of humans. Dang, what a bunch of stupid, unimaginative lumps. They have a beautiful laboratory on Mars and the best they can do is: "It's time to kill the Lankies. It's time to kill the Lankies." Gah! They know practically nothing about them except that it is hard to kill them and they apparently can't imagine learning more. Humans use flash-bangs to surprise and disorient other humans. How about the equivalent for the Lankies? Send down a bunch of probes that beep, boop, sparkle or belch in different EM spectrums to find which ones the Lankies sense best. Then figure out if you can blind them temporarily or permanently. Tag 'em like wild animals and track them. Send remote cameras down their holes and record what they do down there. What the heck do they eat? Dissect the ones killed and see if you can create a poison that will take them out without using nukes. Better yet, create a disease that will wipe them out. What acids, bases, solvents or enzymes work on the molecules that make up Lankies? Are they dextrorotary or levorotary or something humans haven't see before.Next up is the economics. The other countries finally start chipping in money and suddenly real food is available again? Money doesn't make cows give milk and veggies don't grow by waving bills at them. If the other countries started sending food supplies, I could understand, but saying that they started sending money doesn't make a lick of sense.

War weary, suffering from PTSD and burn out, the storiy's protagonist Andrew Grayson struggles with hopelessness that comes to those who know only war and have only war in their futures. This sixth installment in the Frontline's series is a slower, more introspective read than the earlier five and this is a good thing. Kloos takes a journey through the endless repetitions that make up a soldier's life, the enduring grind fills the days and accomplishes little, still risking life and limb. One could switch Grayson from the skies over Mars to the deserts of the Middle East and the story would ring strikingly similar.If you are looking for pulse throbbing action from the word go, this installment is not going to scratch that itch. The pacing is slower than others in the series and the pay off at the end is far more tethered in reality than any Science Fiction book usually lands. This book will annoy those looking for shoot 'em up, the hero wins big and everyone goes home happy. But if you looking for an exploration of the costs of long and brutal wars on those we ask to fight them, if you are looking for a THOUGHTFUL book, this book is for you.But don't worry, there is STILL Lankie fights and cool battle scenes! You just need to wait a little longer.If you are fan of simply excellent Sci Fi, read this series. If you are fan of this series, read this book.

This is definitely one of my favorite series. The thought of battling 20 m tall aliens may seem so far fetched, but the characters make this all seem plausible. No grand fleets of thousands upon thousands of starships fighting one another, as entertaining as that can be, this series almost feels realistic in its portrayal. Nuttles' The Empire's Corps, comes really close to the same character development. In Kloos' series there are just fewer characters and you get to know them much more intimately. Robin, keep doing what you're doing so Marko can keep on writing. Enjoying the series. Find more plots. Thank you for the entertainment.

My only "complaint", if you will, is the part where Grayson retrieves the pistol that he had confiscated. Pitiful oversight that.Kloos' Frontline series has always been about the people not the ordnance that some SF writers go for. Andrew Grayson and his colleagues humanize the "military machine" and de-glorifies war while giving us a view of the sacrifices. A fitting analogy to current times.I hope there is at least one more in this series (and Andrew and Halley better not buy the farm!).

I have enjoyed the previous books in the series (and recommend them if you haven't already read them). This book was kinda slow, and the events seemed a rehash of what's happened earlier. Also, little to nothing was resolved.Get the ebook, it's less of an investment.

The Fire Wish (Jinni Wars), by Amber Lough

Review

VOYA, June 2014 "In medieval times, during a war between the humans and jinni, sixteen-year-old Najwa lives below the world’s surface in the cavern of crystal, fire, and water, training to be a jinni who can spy on the humans living above them. But her first time above ground, she is enthralled by the beauty of the human world and intrigued by the human prince she sees in Baghdad’s palace. Meanwhile, sixteen-year-old Zayele is living outside of Baghdad in rural Zeb, where she chafes at the restrictions placed on her life, especially when she is unexpectedly selected by the caliph’s vizier to travel to Baghdad to wed the prince. When Najwa makes a forbidden trip to the surface of the world, she is seen and seized by Zayele, who wishes for them to trade places. As each is catapulted into a foreign world, events unfold showing each young woman’s strengths amid unexpected love and intrigue. Treachery by the vizier endangers both Najwa and Zayele, who learn they are connected not only by Zayele’s wish. Lough has created a lyrical story resounding with magic, love, and strife. Besides the lure of beautiful language and a compelling story, she also touches on themes of the desire to truly belong and the discovery of inner strength. This first book in a series will hook young adult readers who grew up on tales of Aladdin and the Arabian Nights and is sure to entice others looking for a tale of romance and adventure. This first-time author has created a winning entry in the world of young adult fantasy."Booklist Reviews, July 1 2014"In this Middle Eastern fantasy reinvention of The Prince and the Pauper (1881), a soon-to-be-princess swaps places with a jinn training to be a spy in the decades-long war between the jinni and the humans for survival and supremacy. Najwa, the jinn, is still learning the extent of her powers, training under the famous magus Faisal for the Eyes of Iblis corps. Zayele, a daring young girl set to wed the caliph’s son, wants nothing more than to stay with her family. The two girls should be enemies, but when they accidentally meet on the way to the caliph’s palace, Zayele makes a powerful wish that switches their lives and points of view, making each girl a linchpin for their respective sides of the ongoing battle. There’s a promise of romance, though it remains slight in this first installment in a planned series, and the focus remains mostly on the intriguing schemes the girls find themselves in. Debut author Lough’s lovely and lyrical writing fills this fascinating fantasy world with delightful, lush detail."Publishers Weekly, May 5 2014"Debut author Lough introduces two courageous, resilient heroines in this series opener, a historical fantasy set in Baghdad’s Golden Age. Humans and jinn once lived in peace, advancing scientific knowledge through cooperation, but are now at war. Zayele, a free-spirited 16-year-old from Zab, where the war began, dreads her upcoming marriage to the caliph’s son Kamal; she’ll have to leave behind her blind brother. Zayele makes a wish to trade places with the unwilling jinni Najwa. Reflecting the author’s background in military intelligence, Najwa, part of the prestigious Eyes of Iblis Corps, must investigate the game-changing weapon Kamal is developing. As both girls struggle to undo Zayele’s wish, they uncover their shared, hidden past and become targets of deadly intrigue. Though sometimes predictable, Lough’s novel distinguishes itself by its willingness to follow through on the consequences of its protagonists’ actions. “We know you didn’t mean to harm Najwa, but what is disturbing is that you so freely took from someone else,” the wise Faisal explains to Zayele before sending her to rescue Najwa and reverse her mistake."

#9,038,633 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I'm surprised I hadn't heard more about this book when it first released. I preorder in paperback because it was only $5 and really enjoyed the entire story. The first 50 pages were slow only because it took sometime to get used to all the names and who was who but after that the story quickly escalated and you're caught up in a world of jinni, prince & princess and wishes. I loved Najwa's story and her admiration of the prince from afar. I thought we got a true glimpse of Zayele on the beach with Atish, hopefully we get to see more of her true self in The Blind Wish. I love the magical world created and I'm looking forward to finding out more in book two. I'm hoping for more romance and the war to be settled.

On my quest for diversity in literature, I discovered a blog post about a white woman named Amber Lough who grew up in the Middle East and Japan, and then wrote a fantasy book about characters from that area, called The Fire Wish. Could a middle-aged white woman really do justice to a book about Arab teenagers in the desert? She seemed to have done her research, and I was willing to give it a shot. After all, who doesn’t like a book about genies? Djinn? Jinn? In this book: Jinn. Well, even if you aren’t a big fan of the topic, I strongly suggest you give this book a chance.The Plot: Zayele is a headstrong young teenager living in a small village three days’ travel away from Baghdad, in a time long before electronics. She is chosen, against her will, to be a prince’s bride in an act of good faith between the tribe and the palace. Zayele is desperate to get out of this arrangement, even considering running away with her blind younger brother, but eventually is forced to make the journey along with her older cousin Rahela, who is terrified of the jinn, having survived a jinn attack when Zayele was born.Najwa is a slightly timid teenaged jinni, just learning about her own abilities in her underground world. On one of her spy tests it turns out that she is the only jinni – anywhere – who can get past the human palace’s jinn wards and enter. She also discovers some very important information about a young girl who has been chosen to be the first bride of the younger prince (sound familiar?). Wanting to know more about this princess, Najwa breaks the rules and uses her invisibility spell to visit her. Then she gets caught. By the future princess.Zayele is delighted to have caught herself a real, live jinni, and demands a wish from her. Najwa is forced to grant Zayele’s wish to have Najwa take her place as the princess, but instead of returning home, Zayele finds herself taking Najwa’s place in the underground jinn caverns. Suddenly, neither girl is having nearly as much fun as she thought she would, and both must find a way to escape their situations without being caught. Najwa, with only the jinn-loathing Rahela as her ally, cannot wish herself out of her situation, and Zayele has quite a bit of difficulty pretending to be a jinni when she is not. With the impending royal marriage and both the jinn and humans on the verge of war, it is a race against time to set things right.The Verdict: Holy wow, I am a little embarrassed at how quickly I stalked Amber Lough’s twitter, tumblr, and personal website to find out when the next book comes out. The Fire Wish is told from alternating points of view, which made it a little difficult to follow at times, but even that could not slow down my voracious appetite to know what happened to these two girls. I wish (haha, get it?) I could say more about the plot of this book, but I’d be giving away some major spoilers, and this is one book I do NOT want to spoil for anyone.

I'm not a big fan of books written in the first person. And I'm especially not a big fan of two main characters who have the exact same personality being written in the first person. The beginning of this book had me completely confused. I wondered why they sometimes called her Najwa, and other times they called her Zayele, and why the writer kept switching back from her being trained as a Jinni and her being at home wondering why the Viziar has come calling. Until I got to the part where Zayele was shipped off to Baghdad, I did not even realize these were two different people. And what do you know, when the two meet on the barge to Baghdad, low and behold, they look exactly alike. So, I have to ding the book a couple of stars for not being clear, and for writing both characters in the first person in a way that just caused confusion.Otherwise, the storyline was okay, but I doubt I will read any following books in the series.

A fun take on well-known arabian folklore. I like it:}

Visually rich, lyrical in spots and filled with exciting, breath-holding moments. It's "The Prince and the Pauper" set in ancient Bagdad, but in this case the pauper is a Jinn. A wonderful read.

I really enjoyed the read. I had a hard time putting it down. I had never read anything about jinnis before and it was a breath of fresh air.

So so so so good! The audio book was great as well and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next one.

Predictable but interesting enough to keep you reading.
