Our Endangered Values: America's Moral Crisis, by Jimmy Carter

Amazon.com Review

Even at his most irate, Jimmy Carter projects cool, communicating with a poise that commands attention while gently signaling to opponents that they better do their homework before mounting any sort of debate. Perhaps that's why the former president, Nobel Peace Prize-winner, and bestselling author ranks as one of the planet's most respected voices in the areas of human rights, diplomacy, and good government. And when a clearly agitated Carter suggests America is on a slippery slope, globally speaking, as he does throughout Our Endangered Values: America's Moral Crisis, it's wise to pay heed even if the book's overriding Christian perspective may trip cautionary bells in secular readers. More a set of loosely connected essays than a single, precise argument, Our Endangered Values outlines Carter's worldview while pondering what he posits are key problems looming in the 21st century. Thematic touchstones such as the war, environmental negligence, civil liberties, the rich-poor divide, and the separation of church and state form the book's backbone, with Carter filtering each through the prism of his own vast experience. He doesn't much like what he sees. Though much of the data Carter presents to support his arguments is familiar, it's worth repeating that "the rate of firearm homicides in the United States is nineteen times higher than that of 35 other high-income countries combined." That "In addition to imprisonment, the United States of America stands almost alone in the world in our fascination with the death penalty, and our few remaining companions are regimes with a lack of respect for basic human rights." That when it comes to sharing the wealth with poor nations "Americans are the stingiest of all industrialized nations. We allow about one-thirtieth as much as is commonly believed [or] sixteen cents out of each $100 of the gross national income." America: land of the free, home of the brave? Try global bully with a bad attitude and reckless sense of entitlement. Carter spends significant time contextualizing his own spirituality, as if to underscore the urgency of his message that fundamentalism in any form is bad, especially when it encroaches on government. Indeed, Carter persuasively links fundamentalism to harmful policy, the subjugation of women, general xenophobia, and a host of other ills occurring all around him. And while George W. Bush in particular and the current administration in general take fewer clips on the chin than might be expected, Carter's arguments for common-sense change are deeply resonant nonetheless. --Kim Hughes

From Publishers Weekly

After several books on spirituality and homespun values (most recently Sharing Good Times), President Carter turns his attention to the political arena. He is gravely concerned by recent trends in conservatism, many of which, he argues, stem from the religious right's openly political agenda. Criticizing Christian fundamentalists for their "rigidity, domination and exclusion," he suggests that their open hostility toward a range of sinners (including homosexuals and the federal judiciary) runs counter to America's legacy of democratic freedom. Carter speaks eloquently of how his own faith has shaped his moral vision and of how he has struggled to reconcile his own values with the Southern Baptist church's transformation under increasingly conservative leadership. He also makes resonant connections between religion and political activism, as when he points out that the Lord's Prayer is a call for "an end to political and economic injustice within worldly regimes." Too much of the book, however, is a scattershot catalogue of standard liberal gripes against the current administration. Throwing in everything from human rights abuses at Abu Ghraib to global warming, Carter spreads himself too thin over talking points that have already been covered extensively. Jimmy Carter may not have been the best president - events conspired against him - but he IS a great American. He lives and breathes his faith and patriotism. The man is past 90 and the only thing that has kept him from doing good works is the fact that he recently had a cancer diagnosis. And he's not afraid of dying!I've purchased about a dozen copies of this book over the years as gifts for friends. Some of them are scornful because he's a Democrat. I tell them to forgive him the 4 years he was in office and concentrate on the other 80+ years of his life. There's nothing to forgive, but if it gets them to read the book I don't care. The chapter on separation of church and state is the best explanation I've ever read. This book is about 10 years old but the state of our values has never been more in danger of vanishing into the narrow-mindedness so prevalent today.I happen to be a Catholic, not an Evangelical, but Jimmy Carter really touches me in ways that encourage me to live my faith.

Excellent easy read a must for folks who want to get the basics of most of the political, economic and especially "religious" issues that divide our country. Even though it was written 9 years ago it is absolutely relevant today. President Carter writes from the perspective of not only past president with intimate knowledge of American foreign policy and diplomacy, but also as a committed Christian, global practitioner of his faith of love and service to the lesser among us, and an honest broker for peace between governments and nations. Spoiler alert: not for those who believe in blind American Exceptionalism, nor for those who live in political party bubbles, nor those who prefer single source information based on the psychology of fear, hatred, bigotry, etc. Reading this presents the danger of bursting bubbles while offering legitimate discourse about the true fabric of our great nation....a long lost skill and desire by the people that at an earlier time maintained national sanity. Blunt and powerful.

This is a review of the unabridged CD audiobook version of this work. The positive aspect of this book is that it points out quite a few problems in the moral fabric of the today’s society and how that has deteriorated over since the 1970s. These include rising religious intolerance among the strongly religious (unfortunately little is said about the rising intolerance of so many of the secularly minded), growing conflict among religious groups (unfortunately little is said of the increasingly poor relations between the religious and non-religious), the decreasing separation of church and state, the decline in rationality, increased divorce rates and a plaethora of other problems (ie, increasing differences between the classes and increasing levels of poverty). Unfortunately, the book offers little beyond the obvious to alleviate these problems (i.e., middle and upper classes doing more through charity and actually meeting with the downtrodden). It should be added that the audiobook version of this work is relatively well read by the author himself.

I'm a moderate and agree on President Carter on most things. The book is well written, clear, and concise. It is a good summary of the major issues of today. I'm often dismayed at the hatefulness of so-called Christian fundamentalists. Carter also comments on another well-worn issue: abortion. I have never been able to get a right-to-lifer tell me why they consider that life begins at conception for an aborted fetus, yet they never mention the life of the spontaneously miscarried fetus. I think the stats are that 1/2 to 1/3 of all pregnancies are never viable and end in miscarriage. That's a million "unborn babies" who die each year in the US alone ( in addition to medical abortions), if life begins at conception. We have walk-a-thons for many diseases, but none for miscarriage. Is that because people do not really consider every zygote a viable human life? Why the double standard? What does the word "birth" mean?Near the end of the book, he mentioned that he does not visit in the homes of the poor nor do they visit in his house. That offended me since I am poor. Being poor doesn't make one stupid. As Erasmus said, when I get a little money, I buy books. If any is left, I buy food and clothes.

President Carter's observations are very relevant today even though it was published in 2005. His insights and perspective are unique and he offers in easily understood dialog an intriguing look at the forces and circumstances that steered not only his own administration, but those of subsequent Administrations.I was stunned at how it seemed I was reading a book that in large I could have written myself... Not from the life experiences of course, but President Carter reflects almost identically my own feelings and observations. Perhaps not that remarkable since we have very similar demographic backgrounds. Both of us clearly in the minority however when you look at recent polls of older Caucasian U.S. citizens, especially those of us who grew up in the South.I'm a few years younger than the former President, but grew up in a Baptist family in the South during the same basic time period. I was profoundly disappointed with his Presidency, but there is absolutely no question of the man's character and his immeasurable value to this Nation post-Presidency. He serves as an inspirational personification of all we should aspire to be. This book clearly Illustrates much of what is holding us back today with gridlock and partisan bickering. He reaffirms the true values that I recall being "American" values growing up. So much of this has become distorted in today's "conservative" hysteria that threatens to undo decades, if not centuries of progress in achieving equality in this "land of the free"...It is time true Americans take a hard look in the mirror and decide if freedom really means freedom, and if we will turn away from the increasingly fundamentalist politics espoused by an increasing number of political figures in today's landscape.

I strongly urge hikers to find a different book. The book Day Hiking in the Olympic Peninsula by Craig Romano is far superior. The only thing to recommend this book is the size. no index of hikes, does not include ones just outside the park but in the Olympics. If you're going with just one book, i suggest a different one. Perhaps a good book if you are hiking with kids.

My family and I purchased this book for our trip to ONP. We planned to take some smaller hikes (5 miles or less) and this book did a good job of pointing us in the right direction in determining which ones were extra special and which were simply ok. For each hike, there was a description of the hike, its difficulty, some things you could expect to see and its location. It's thin size was also a plus in that you could easily throw it in your backpack. I would recommend the book.

This was just what I was looking for. A compact backpack size that was easy to read, with maps for our week on the Olympic Peninsula. We did four of the hikes recommended and will definitely use this again.

Great for visitors with short period of time and wanting to make best use of time and see greatest variety of landscape. Maps good . List of priority fr easiest to most difficult also especially helpful even tho' all hikes are easy. Organized by area is most helpful.

The title says best easy day hikes but a lot of them are not easy but moderate and more challenging. Maybe this is an error but one has an elevation gain of 1340 feet.

Bought this for a trip we were planning to coastal Washington and Oregon...wanted to enjoy hiking...without having to train for weeks / months...this rates the trails...gives distance / elevation change / etc. Very accurate for the occasional hiker

This little book comes in handy, especially when you have more than a couple of days to visit the park. The information is accurate and the descriptions are pretty much right on.Definitely would recommend to friends or family.

great info source, if you are going to the olympic peninsula you need to get this book.

Review

"In this remarkably thorough, articulate portrait of Hezbollah, Norton . . . analyzes how the organization was formed, how it evolved and its current role in Lebanese politics." (Publishers Weekly)"Augustus Richard Norton's timely Hezbollah chronicles [a] dramatic evolution and its sweeping implications for the region and beyond. His lucid primer is the first serious reappraisal of the radical Shiite group since [the 2006] war shattered six years of relative calm on one of the world's most volatile frontiers."---Jonathan Finer, Washington Post Book World"Norton, who has been studying Lebanon, and especially the Lebanese Shiites, for longer than Hezbollah has been in existence . . . offers here a brisk and balanced history . . . of Hezbollah while situating the party in the larger Lebanese and regional contexts."---L. Carl Brown, Foreign Affairs"The best recent study of Hezbollah."---Fareed Zakaria, Newsweek"Augustus Richard Norton, an American academic and former U.S. army officer, has studied that Islamic fundamentalist organization since its formation. And now, in Hezbollah . . . he offers a cogent analysis of its emergence and impact on Lebanese politics."---Sheldon Kirsher, Canadian Jewish News"A clear, concise history of Hezbollah with specific reference to its relevant sociopolitical context. Piquant anecdotes and richly textured details make the book enjoyable reading."---Kristian P. Alexander, Middle East Policy Council"This short, authoritative book, based on first-hand experience, efficiently analyses [Hezbollah's] status."---Iain Finlayson, The Times"This excellent short history of Hezbollah . . . demonstrates that dismissing it as a 'terrorist organization' is both glib and dishonest. . . . . Everyone who wants to understand the complexities of the Middle East, and particularly those of Lebanon and Israel, and wants to reach the truth beyond the political rhetoric, should read this book."---Bruce Elder, Sydney Morning Herald"How do you classify and develop policy toward an organization that has committed acts of terrorism in the past, that currently provides important social services . . . that defends its country from occupation . . . that plays by the rules in official Lebanese national politics? . . . Norton elucidates these domestic and international complexities in Hezbollah: A Short History. . . With other similarly complex organizations on the rise, such as Hamas in Palestine, Norton provides a model of how we might begin to think through their multidimensional, seemingly contradictory natures."---Allen McDuffee, In These Times"In his new book Hezbollah, Augustus Richard Norton . . . provides a succinct account of the group's rise from the chaos created by Israel's invasions and occupation of Lebanon in the late 1970s and early 1980s, which ended only in 2000. Mr. Norton also explores the origins and political orientation of the group, now led by the Shiite cleric Hasan Nasrallah, in a complex web of religious and political identities in Lebanon--with a special emphasis on the role of Shia Islam in the organization."---Richard Byrne, Chronicle of Higher Education

"Hezbollah is a timely and landmark work. Richard Norton draws on his extensive expertise to offer a comprehensive history that will be of interest to anyone who seeks a better understanding of Hezbollah, Lebanon, or current developments in the Middle East."--Lee Hamilton, Vice Chair of the 9/11 Commission and Co-Chair of the Iraq Study Group"One of the most remarkable developments in the Middle East in recent years is Hezbollah's meteoric rise to power. No one can better explain the broad implications of this phenomenon than Richard Norton. Drawing on his vast knowledge of Lebanon, Norton has written a timely and readable primer that lucidly explains the intricacies of Hezbollah's ideology and history and demystifies its political strategy."--Vali Nasr, author of The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam Will Shape the Future"Norton is uniquely positioned to provide an analysis of Hezbollah, one that is historical, nuanced, and informed by more than twenty-five years of experience as a researcher and policy advisor on Lebanon. He is one of the foremost American experts on Hezbollah and Shi'i politics in Lebanon. In addition, Norton's writing is always clear and accessible. This concise and accurate primer will be invaluable to general readers, reporters, and scholars."--Lara Deeb, author of An Enchanted Modern: Gender and Public Piety in Shi'i Lebanon"I recommend this book with greatest enthusiasm. Norton is one of the premier--if not the premier--American authorities on Shi'i politics in Lebanon. Add to this the fact that he is a talented writer who can communicate complex ideas in a fluent, engaging, and accessible fashion. Telling quotes and anecdotes enliven the book and ground it. Norton is the rare academic whose expertise doesn't prevent him from communicating well with a general reader."--Eva Bellin, Hunter College, City University of New York"This short, authoritative book, based on first-hand experience, efficiently analyses [Hezbollah's] status."--Roger MacGinty, International Affairs"This excellent short history of Hezbollah . . . demonstrates that dismissing it as a 'terrorist organization' is both glib and dishonest. . . . . Lumped into the one size fits all portrayal of terror groups popularized by the media and the government, the author performs a valuable public service in removing Hezbollah from this fog of uncertainty and falsehood, portraying it accurately amid the context of radicalization and growing awareness within the Shia community in the 70's and early 80's. Norton highlights the inherent conflict within Hezbollah between pragmatism and dedication to the founding tenets of the organization. It is the resolution of this conflict that will determine the fate of Lebanon amid the power struggles ongoing in the aftermath of the summer 2006 conflict that the author says split Lebanon into two groups; those who support the goals of the Cedar Revolution and those who feel victimized by the corrupt government and elites, seeking to share power at the expense of the Sunni power structure. The pragmatism of Hezbollah seems without limits, whether cooperating with Communist or Christian groups in political parlays or in adhering to the "rules of the game" devised by them and the Israelis during the Israeli occupation of Southern Lebanon. It is this pragmatism that sets Hezbollah apart from other Islamist political organizations and Norton does a fine job of exploring it in detail.A fascinating look that could have been far longer and examined far more but remains one of the best on the subject.

a book that stays neutral to Hezbollah . A chapter or two did get confusing with names and political in fighting of Muslim groups can get confusing as well. I finished the book in 3 days I'm glad I picked it up. it helps give a moderate understanding of Lebanon, which is confusing. I would have liked the book to include more info about relations with Christians in Lebanon.

excellent

Hezbollah is obviously a well-trained military organization. Whether I disagree or agree with such a disciplined military organ I respect the threat and its dedication as the opponent. Fascinating....George

Great Book. Thanks a lot to the seller for her kindness. The book seems looks phisically new. Has been a very useful tool for my research. Although the postal service wasn't as efficient as expected but i feel satissfied aout this purchase. Thanks a lot.

I'm a foreign policy professional and needed a quick yet comprehensive read that would give me the broad outlines of the history and context of Hezbollah. This book fit the bill perfectly. It was authoritative while remaining relatively plain-spoken and easy to read.

In "Hezbollah", Mr. Norton sets out the offer a more "balanced and nuanced" view of "this complex organization". The Western news media often depict a stereotypical and one dimensional view of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, whereas Hezbollah remains first and foremost a resistance force. Further, Hezbollah has accepted that Lebanon is too diverse to be ruled by a Shia Islamist autocratic rule similar to Iran's, and harbors no ambitions towards that goal.Unfortunately, this book is too brief to accomplish Mr. Norton's purpose of writing it. I can't put my finger on why I never felt any traction with the material. There is very little on the history of Hezbollah, and not enough on the other numerous sects, Syria and Iran and their complex interplay in Lebanese politics. If you have little knowledge of the history of Lebanon, you will certainly need basic supplemental reading to avoid confusion while reading this book. Much is referenced to Lebanon's bloody and protracted civil war in the 1970s and 1980s, but not in a holistic way.If you're in Southern California, by the way, be sure to visit one of the best Lebanese restaurants in Long Beach called Open Sesame in Belmont Shore.

In this short, but revealing book, Norton has provided an excellent overview of the history and politics surrounding Hezbollah. The book contains chapters on the founding of the group, its internal dynamics, as well as how it operates in the regional context. Unlike some analysis of the group, Norton freely discusses both sides of the group: the side that operates and behaves like an organized and effective political party, and the side that can be characterized as a terrorist organization. Norton does this with relative ease and a clear and direct writing style. He demonstrates that the group has evolved at a rapid pace and that no one can say with absolute certainty how the group will continue to evolve.Unlike Harik's work on Hezbollah, Norton does a fine job of retaining some neutrality here and does not let a great deal of personal opinion seep into what should be a scholarly work. He has an impressive amount of experience working inside Lebanon and is thus very close to the subject he writes about, but this does not appear to have caused him to tilt one way or the other. His chapter on the July 2006 war with Israel is proof of that. His treatment of a highly controversial subject is remarkably balanced. He identifies what both sides were doing and thinking at the time and how it led to the outbreak of real hostilities. The book is relatively short, but it was not meant to be a sweeping and comprehensive history. He deals with all of the important aspects of the group and the finished product should be read by all those seeking a greater understanding of Hezbollah. Anything Norton produces in the future will be essential reading for the field.
