About the Author

Joshua Bennett received his PhD in English from Princeton University. He is currently a member of the Society of Fellows at Harvard Univeristy, and has received fellowships from the Callaloo Creative Writing Workshop, the Hurston/Wright Foundation, and the Ford Foundation. His poems have been published or are forthcoming in Beloit Poetry Journal, Callaloo, the Kenyon Review, and New England Review. Bennett tours nationally and internationally as a performance poet and has recited his original work at the Sundance Film Festival, the NAACP Image Awards, and President Obama’s Evening of Poetry and Music at the White House. He lives in Yonkers, New York.

The Sobbing School by Joshua Bennett is the poet’s debut collection of poetry in which he finds himself often meandering between self-reflective days of his youth to confronting the realities of the modern day climate. Within the work itself, Bennett is never conventional and stable for too long as he often takes it upon himself to play with form and structure. The margins are fully explored to function and serve the feelings and emotions that he is attempting to convey. In addition to this observation, some of the literary devices present in the collection that provide impact are assonance, alliteration, as well as allusion. Bennett displays through myriad styles that it is hard to truly pin down his writing delivery which really brings the poems to life as they take a form of their own.One thing that stands out and is blatantly obvious when reading this collection is that Bennett’s poems can more times than not feel inaccessible. The writer’s big vocabulary and profound grasp of the English language give the poems a cryptic aura that may be hard for the average joe to decipher if they are uncertain of how each word fits into the context of his work. However, this should not be seen as a gripe of the author and his ever shifting thoughts of ideas and motives, but more so of us as people for not having the adequate understanding due to the inefficiencies that exist within the American education system.In all honesty, The Sobbing School is truly a masterpiece with tremendous shelf life as each poem lives within its own galaxy and orbit. For one to fully experience the work, they must allow themselves to read slowly and repetitively in hopes that they will fully come to terms with the ideas that exist within Bennett’s mind. In simplest terms, patience is a virtue that will reward the reader as they allow themselves to be enveloped by the work and more specifically, the beautiful words that are carefully constructed and positioned to provide everlasting effect.

Where do I even begin? I was not sure what to expect from this book, but to say that I am utterly pleased with his work would be a disservice. From start to finish, I found myself in a whirlwind of imagery and thoughtfulness, as if each and every single word, punctuation, break, and structure was provided with care and intent. I read this piece and then read it once more. Thankful that in a world where poetry books are considered to be two lines on one page, full of quotes and sayings, that there are still great minds who put care and style into prose and words. This is a MUST HAVE! Something to pass on to the next generation...

I think Joshua Bennett is a great writer, but his poetry is sometimes hard to...access? I don't know if that's the right word. I'm an English teacher and love poetry - writing, reading, teaching - but I found some of his poems to be so esoteric that they were hard to unpack. Perhaps I am just not familiar enough with his work, or perhaps it's just my own personal style of poetry, but I was just eh on his collection.

Perhaps the best collection of poetry I've read. Bennett's poems combine the dexterity of deep and rigorous thought with the smoothness, the lyricism of meditative poetic prose. Quite simply a must-read.

Still way too many typos for a published bookThe story is finally becoming clearerI skim through the saccharine love scenes between Alexis and Cassidy .. the constant chatter while they are making love, is creepy and completely off puttingThat said, I'm starting to enjoy this series, finallyI persevered as I have liked the sub plot from the get go... all the secrets, they're actually quite believable, given today's current political climate, even probableThe author appears to have listened to the criticisms of the first 2 books in this series, as this one, had ironed out some of the more jarring aspects of the first two booksThere are less declarations of undying loveLess ridiculous and impossible promise made to each other and less grammatical errors, and the story is less confusing nowActually looking forward to the 4th book in this series

Best one yet! I fell in love with this series from the very beginning and it just keeps getting better and better. I'v read the first two books in the series twice now and enjoy them even more each time. It has also helped me to know the characters better because I feel I missed a lot the first time around.I don't know how Nancy Healy comes up with the twists and turns in her books, but they sure do keep me spellbound. Without adding any spoilers, just let me say the ending of this blew me away. One portion of the ending I may have seen coming, the other.......whew!

Another excellent installment in Alex & Cassidy's story. Ms Healy is definitely one of my favorite storytellers. There is so much in this book. Perfect twist at the end. I'm going to dive right in to the next one. I highly reccommend. What clairvoyance too! It's almost as if things from the story are playing out in real time! Now that's some storytelling.

I have read many books and this series by far is my favorite. This book kept my interest the whole way through to the end. Once I picked it up I could not put it down until I finished it. Nancy Healy is an amazingly talented writer! I have read the first two books in the series multiple times and I know I will read this book over and over again. The political intrigue in the book was so well written that it made it very easy to get caught up in the book. The love portrayed between Alex and Cassidy is so pure and honest that it touched my heart. I highly recommend this series

After reading book 3 can not wait to start reading book 4. So detailed and it does make you think. I will reread the total series because the characters are complicated and not always good or bad but reacted to the times and thier beliefs.Suggest strongly Read booksThank you for sharing your gift

The third installment is by far the best. Commitment is an incredible read. You can clearly see the growth in Ms. Healy's writing from Intersection to Betrayal to Commitment. The combination of the political battle/conspiracy intermingled with the family/love that has been created by the author is seamless. There is no doubt that Ms. Healy knows what she is doing. You will not be disappointed. If you want to get lost in a well told tale don't hesitate to read Ms. Healy's books. Just make sure you read from the beginning.

I have read the first 3 books in this series. The writing is very similar to JA Armstrong possibly an alias? The story line is interesting but I had to go back to books 1&2 to place who's who. I'm not usually a mystery reader especially when the mystery runs through multiple books which could be the cause of my confusion. There's a very good chance that books 4&5 will be purchased soon.

As with the rest of the books in this series this book had me up all night. It is a page turner that you just can not put down because you WANT to see what happens next!! Alex & Cassidy are characters you WANT to know. You WANT to be involved with. And just when you THINK you have it figured out.... BAM!! Nancy gets you in the end and leaves you hanging in anticipation for then next round!! I am so waiting for her next book in the series to see where she takes this..... If you have not read INTERSECTION OR BETRAYAL.... make sure you read them first and in that order. Or you will be totally LOST!!

This is not a new book. I have had a copy since it first came on the shelf and have read it more than several times. It stands alone.Any effort - i.e. Satori to "cover the lost period " is unnecessary.The book is perfect, the characters strong and well drawn - especially the bad guys.I love the book and when my Kindle ran out of juice and turned itself off I found my place in my ancient book copy and continued reading. It is not for the squeamish or sensitive.I recommend this book to any adult.

Normally I don't reread books, however, since I first read Shibumi in the 70's when it was originally published, I do remember that I enjoyed it very much, along with Eiger Sanction and Loo Sanction, so I decided to try it again. To my delight it holds up very well. The cast of characters, led by Nicholai Hel, his concubine Hana, sidekick Le Cagot and many others are well drawn and each has his own distinct character traits, some are endearing and others hateful. There are some slow parts to the story when Trevanian gets preachy, but what amazed me is these are the same political and environmental issues we are discussing today, fifty years later. Another slow area of the book was the great detail Trevanian goes into with regard to spelunking. I understand he worked it into the plot but it could have easily been shortened. The rest of the book is terrific. It is at once exciting, sexy, funny, satirical, philosophical and educational. We learn about Japanese culture, Chinese culture, WWII history, Basque culture and spelunking, all the while Hel deals with the CIA, NSA, MI5 and MI6. Trevanian was also a philosopher of sorts, giving us his take on society and how we relate to one another. Hel is the bastard child of a Russian aristocrat mother and her boy toy Prussian Count who she considered to be only breeding stock, He was born in Shanghai and ultimately raised by the Russian woman and a Japanese general during the Japanese occupation of that city. As the outcome of WWII became clear the general sends Hel to Japan to study with one of his dear friends until he reached manhood. Here he learned much of what would serve him well as an independent paid assassin. How this'll ties into the story line Trevanian has woven makes for a great read. I will probably reread Eiger Sanction and Loo Sanction again as this experience was so enjoyable.

I read this book way back when and I thought it was worth another read. It is till a good book. My gripe is with the creators of the Kindle version. As a creator of online books, I know this is not an easy task, but sheesh. I suspect someone did a global spell check without their brain engaged. The asian borad game Go plays a role in the storyline, but everywhere the word "Go" should be is the word "Goo!" Even after I figured it out it was jarring every time I encountered it. I was once a ranked amateur Go player, so I know more about the game than the average reader, but c'mon people. The purpose here is to take advantage of the legs an older book might still have, not by reprinting it (very expensive) but by republishing it as an e-book. Take a little time and do it right. Pay someone to proof read the text after it is converted, maybe.

I read this book because it was vaguely related to the movie John Wick. I am very glad I did.Most popular American literature has a common tone. This book is written from a perspective that has made me want to broaden my horizons further.This is the first time I have read literature that is from the point of view of the Japanese during WWII and it was refreshing.If you liked John Wick, I'd highly recommended this book as well.

The cover shown here for this review is different than the one I thought I downloaded so I don't know if there is a difference between covers. I loved this book. There are many reviews already which are accurate. The main thing I think that is important to know when reading Shibumi is that it's a book written as a majestic literary genius piece of art. The author is truly amazing and needs to be read and absorbed. It's not for the person who does not enjoy reading like eating a fine meal. No skimming, no skipping words. Enjoy the talent the author has in description. I've read this twice now many years apart. I had forgotten many things and just knew it had left me the first time with a feeling of what true greatness can be if we only knew how to achieve "Shibumi" Enjoy him, try to be in his shoes, read it again. A great book, but certainly not serious literature. Perhaps Trevanian's best, and for a "Spy Novel" certainly amazing. Trevanian is a bold author to even begin to describe a mind formed by a decade of passionate disciplined of study a game that makes chess look like a game for high-schoolers, and physical training and discipline that very few have the ability to approach, much lest pursue for years and master. If you think that ordinary states of consciousness are the only states that are valuable, that meditation is a waste of time, or that your mom and dad knew (or you know) almost everything about sexual pleasure, this is probably not the book for you. If you have made a study of (or some penetration into) the edges of human consciousness and capabilities and would like to read a spy novel, this is well worth your time.

While masquerading as an assassin/spy thriller, Shibumi is really a very interesting and mostly successful exercise in literary style and substance. At its core the book is an essay on a wide range of topics such as politics, socioeconomics, spelunking, sex, and East/West culture clashes. That all of those disparate elements are wrapped up in a spoof of sorts of spy novels with a near inhuman superman who remains an enigma as its protagonist is both daring and audacious. Yet the book remains entertaining during each of its unexpected turns. Recommended to those seeking something genuinely unique and literary.
