I have had specialists for my son for 5 years from his anxiety, OT for sensory and fine motor skills, ADD and now OCD. This book has helped me realize I'm not alone and offers a lot of great tips for managing life to make it better for everyone. I can't wait to redo my child's environment based on all of these tips. A lot of "ah ha" moments for me in this book. Thank you!!
As an OT who has a specialty area in Sensory Processing this book seems to have a lot to offer. I love that it is written by a mom who really knows the challenges of parenting a child with special needs and can understand the impact that these strategies can have.
Great explanations and descriptions of children on the spectrum, including ADHD, SPD, Anxiety Disorder, ASD and Bi-Polar. Helpful frame of reference of what the child may be experiencing and how it might feel for us - Neurotypicals. Awesome suggestions on how to organize your home and life to help with transitions. Great idea's on organizing your child's room to help them be more independent. I loved the book so much that I order extra's for friends.
Great source for anyone with a child or teaches a child with sensory issues! Breaks it down into easy to understand ways to implement a sensory diet! Highly recommended!!!
As an Early Interventionist and Parent Mentor, I found The Sensory Child Gets Organized as an easy to read resource for families that need practical solutions. There are so many great ideas for parents; for example, how to make traveling with children successful and how morning or homework times can run more smoothly. Most of all this book helps parents embrace their child rather than fight up against them!!! You also may be surprised that this book can help grown-ups too.
Helpful resource for parents of children with Sensory Processing Disorder
THIS BOOK IS A GEM! It will change your family's life!Carol's writing is clear, concise, and tangible with practical application for ALL types of kids. After reading a few books on my son's new diagnosis (Sensory Processing Disorder), I felt equipped with the knowledge of his struggles but had no idea what to do for him at home ! How do you bring it all together ? How do you centralize the most important things in your household? How do you create a well run ship when all of your attention (And energy) is focused on steering an overstimulated/distracted child? How do you get him to do small chores without them becoming all encompassing meltdowns?? How do you teach them life skills without incessant helicopter parenting? How do you allow them to be independent AND successful at home? You read this book...that's how! It's a fast read, with clear direction, and a laundry list of resources stowed in the back.(And that's coming from an ADHD parent who never finishes a book or project. :). )
This book has some useful suggestions. However, I thought a lot of the things mentioned were pretty much common sense.
