Tommy grew up in poverty in a welfare family. His alcoholic father was violently abusive and in and out of prison due to drunkenness and illegal activities. His mother was completely illiterate, but she knew Tommy was going to be a “preacher man someday because God told her.” Tommy dropped out of school after the 6th grade and eventually pursued a life of crime until he met Sister Goldie in Venice Beach, CA. when he was 17 and on the run from the law. Excellent book on the miracles of Auzasa as told to Tommy Welchel. He interviewed people who not only had been there in the 1906-1909 revival, but who had participated in the amazing miracles. I've heard testimonies of ministers who read a chapter at a time to their congregations and people were healed while listening. Such believing-and-receiving-instantly testimonies are just what the Healing Parable of Jesus meant when he said if people would open their eyes and ears to see and hear, and their hearts to believe, they would be converted and he would heal them. Everyone who wants to know if there really is a God and if he heals today should read this book. As I've said elsewhere, the Azusa fire hasn't really gone out. It's just waiting for hearts to open and let it work again.

My Pastor was preaching on revival and had been reading this book. His sermon made me want to learn more about Azusa Street. This book was so interesting that I couldn't put it down, and read it in about 3 hours. How we need need revival in this day and age! The miracles that took place then are possible today! Repenting, fasting, and seeking God can start another great (and possibly even greater) revival than even Azusa Street!

This is the best book on the Azusa Street Revival, that I have ever read. I am going to buy several copies to give out. I so long to experience the events that people during that time experienced. Five stars is what I am giving it and if I could give it higher I would. Brenda

This is a really wonderful book. I read this to my children (ages 5-10), and they couldn't wait for me to read more. It was especially fun because it told stories of God using children to do incredible miracles. My husband and I were talking at the dinner table the other day about crying over the goodness of God, and my one son said, "you cry a lot mama!" And I was wondering what he meant and so I asked him, and he said, "whenever you read that book, you cry." It's true, many of the stories make you cry, they are so good. This books shows God's goodness, His faithfulness, and it makes you desire Him and His presence in a greater way!

If you don't believe in miracles or at least in the possibility of their being miracles, don't buy this book. I believe in miracles and I am savoring every chapter and miracle presented in this book, by reading them one at a time in the morning for my devotional. This is the way I read the Bible. I consider this book an extension of the Book of Acts in the Bible. I find it significant that it all started with an act of mutual racial acceptance when some white women were earnestly praying to God for a pastor. A black pastor was called by God to cross into the white part of town at night, knock on their door and say that he was told by God to be their pastor. This would have been a reason for them to call the cops in the early nineteen hundreds when it happened. They accepted him as their pastor and provided the money to rent a warehouse on Azusa Street in Los Angeles, California. This was the start of the Assemblies of God denomination among other spiritual revivals in the United States and in other countries around the world.Excellent book! W. Dana Shea

I love this book and I believe everything that is recorded in it. I just wish the author would have done a little more research and at least tried to have provided a few backup documentations such as news article, photos, etc., in order to prove to those unable to believe what happened back then on Azusa Street with proof.

Powerful, powerful stories about the Azusa Street Revival! I do not like to read much at all with the exception of the Bible. Nevertheless, when I began to read this book for the first time, I read it in three days which is very fast for me. The anointing on this book is very tangible! Since reading this book it built my faith and created a hunger in me to see miracles. I have begun to pray for people and see the deaf hear, correction of eyesight's, limbs grow out, many people with pain delivered and a man come out of a coma! I highly recommend this book!

All in all it is a well written book and very detailed. One glaring mistake I noticed was the author listing Richard Speck as the Boston Strangler, when Richard killed a bunch of women in one night and only strangled the first, then stabbed the rest. I might not have caught this had I not just finished "Mindhunter" on Netflix about the creation of the behavioral science's arm that interviewed serial killers. It was these interviews that the author was referring to when he credited Speck as the Boston Strangler. Since this is not a typo but a mistake in fact, I am going always going to wonder if there was something I had not read or heard about before reading, that was wrong, but I just took it on faith that the author did his research.

This is the most complete account of the Pig Farm Murders that I’ve read. Some other books on the subject, such as “Bad Date,” were written before Robert Pickton was publicly suspected of the murders. But this book takes the reader through the whole case, from the early disappearances of women from Vancouver’s Red Light District stroll in the 1980’s, through the verdict in Pickton’s trial in 2008 and the immediate aftermath.Covering so much ground, this book is necessarily a little more broad than it is deep. There’s not a lot of psychological analysis of Pickton, although the author does give an overview of some of his family’s muck-and-mire history on their pig farm. This includes a few childhood incidents, such as Robert Pickton’s early “Silence of the Lambs” experience, that might have shaped some of his cruelties and obsessions. It also recounts some people’s early perception of him as a possible Ed Gein Psycho-like character who was very attached to his mother and who adopted her manner of speaking in repetitious clichés. “We’re like peas in a pod, peas in a pod.”This book also does a good job of demonstrating how no one, most notably the Vancouver police, were sufficiently moved to take any such suspicions seriously – at least not in time to save the lives of many women.Pickton’s victims are given equal time here, but with so many of them - there’s a danger that they just become a series of names. Their life trajectories blur into one tidal wave of misfortune. Almost all of them are represented as having been born pretty and bright, with eager, twinkling eyes. But then the series of steps to their final tragedies becomes almost predictable: teenage rebellion, abusive boyfriends; drug addiction; life on the stroll; children they loved but often could not care for; susceptibility to being lured by someone who offered the promise of drugs and money if they’d accompany him to his place – the pig farm.There are indeed a lot of names in this book – the names of victims and the names of many, many law enforcement officials. The book’s index consists only of these proper names, so you can’t look up any particular subject matter that you might want to refer back along these 700+ pages. There are also a lot of place names recited here. If you aren’t familiar with the neighborhoods in Vancouver’s outskirts, this recitation of the names of intersections, roads, and highways, might become a little tedious and you might find yourself skimming more than reading.In summary, this book is more factual than literary. It tells what happened, but isn’t able to offer much insight into why. But the author does a good professional job of conveying all that we can usually hope for anyway – “Just the facts, ma’am.”(Postscript: I’m reviewing the 2011 Edition of the book, in which some corrections to previous editions have obviously been made. For example, other readers cited the author’s earlier misidentification of Chicago mass murderer Richard Speck. This edition still contains Speck’s name in the index, but the erroneous reference has been deleted from the text. )

I love reading books about serial killers and have read many. This book however is probably one of the most fascinating in that it goes deep into the killer's background and humanizes him rather than demonizes, as some books have done. In addition to plenty of background information on Robert Pickton, there are interviews and in-depth chapters written about his victims, which to me is the most important part of reading about the killer himself. More often, we remember the serial killer and never his victims, but in this book, Stevie Cameron does an excellent job of chronicling the lives of Pickton's victims, as well as his female friends. Interestingly enough, like Ted Bundy's friendship with Ann Rule, someone he once worked with and who ultimately became his biographer, Robert Pickton shared a deep friendship with more than a few women in his life, women who did not become his victims.This book is not always an easy read as of course, if you are aware of Pickton's crimes, he used his pigs and a rendering plant to dispose of his multiple victims, all of whom were prostitutes from Vancouver's worst neighborhood. In some sick way I found myself actually feeling sorry for Pickton and how he was raised, but ultimately ended up as I always do, wondering, what the heck makes these people tick to be able to commit such horrible crimes? The book also chronicles Robert Pickton's tumultuous relationship with his brother as well as the lengthy process and amount of time and incredible cost that it took to bring this man to justice.I highly recommend this book as a fascinating and chilling look into the mind of a killer, his family, friends, and victims all combined.

Well written book on Pickton. I particularly liked the emphasis on the lives of his victims, as so much work on serial killers (and mass killers in general) forgets the lives impacted by the violence the killer commits, not just on his direct victims but on the victims’ families and loved ones, especially when they’re marginalized people.It is a very detailed book and may be difficult to follow for some, particularly if you’re just looking for an entertaining read.

It was easy to drift off trying to stay with this book; it could be very harsh and gritty at times and would then just float off into a lot of political gossip and speculation.Regardless of writing skill, the author spends a good amount of time really bringing the victims' stories to light. This serial killer was a true predator, and tragically succeeded in preying on a group of women that were deemed disposable for far too long. Theirs is a story that needs to be told.

I absolutely loved this, it was so beautifully written and gave a voice to the women who were the victims of Pickton. Stevie Cameron put an insane amount of work and years into the book (I read the acknowledgements, and by the end you will too because it's only right), and it shows. If you're down for a long read that is also an emotional roller coaster, I HIGHLY recommend this book. Just be prepared to want to start a WISH program in your hometown.

About the Author

Elizabeth Scannell-Desch, PhD, RN, OCNS is Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and a professor at Rutgers University, School of Nursing Camden, New Jersey. Her research focuses on women’s health and military nursing. She is a retired Colonel in the US Air Force Nurse Corps, having served 25 years on active duty, including eight years overseas. Her last military assignment was at the Pentagon as the Chief Nurse Executive for the entire Air Force Reserve. She was also Chairperson of the Nursing Division at Mount Saint Mary College, Coordinator for Graduate and Undergraduate Studies at Adelphi University, College of Nursing, Hudson Valley Center, NY, and a faculty member at Rutgers University, College of Nursing, Newark and New Brunswick, New Jersey. Dr. Scannell-Desch has many data-based publications in national and international peer-reviewed nursing journals, including The Western Journal of Nursing Research, The Journal of Nursing Scholarship, The Journal of Psychosocial Nursing, MCN: The American Journal of Maternal-Child Nursing, The Journal of Transcultural Nursing, and The Journal of Advanced Nursing. Much of her published research has focused on nurses serving in the Vietnam War, and the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Dr. Scannell-Desch served as visiting faculty in the summer of 2001 at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Cluj-Napoka, Romania, and as military consultant to the Surgeon General for Nursing Research and for Oncology Nursing. I do not know what I expected when I started reading this book, but soon found myself totally absorbed in each story on the battlefield. Since I have not been in the service, let alone in combat, I was fascinated by the places they worked and the accommodations for the nurses.It amazed me how many were regulars, away from their husbands and children! I can not imagine leaving for a year or two with small children at home! I am a retired Nurse Practitioner who has not worked in any situation except civilian hospitals in my younger years and then Public Health after age 40. The nurses of my generation served but not during war time.The book is very well written and researched. I feel it a privilege to have entered into these brave peoples lives while they served our country, and did it so well! It is bound to have a major impact on the rest of their lives!

I know nothing about nursing or about military life but this book gave me the opportunity to learn.The stories are remarkable. I had no idea that the living conditions were so primitive or the danger so ever-present. The type of injuries that these nurses dealt with on a daily basis were horrific. I came away with a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for these men and women and have been recommending this book to everyone I know. It's a shame that the media has covered very little on the subject of military medicine and the work these people have done should be common knowledge in our country, and sadly that isn't the case.

Real People, Real Nurses. This is a must if you know or knew anyone in the military or in the health field. Dr Scannell-Desch writes from personal experience who is a retired Colonel in the US AirForce. Validates and captivates. I am thankful that this has been made available for all to understand the many faces of war.

As a retired Army nurse, I respect my colleagues from all branches of the military.The authors have managed to capture emotions in these life-saving stories. Ivolunteered for OIF three times, yet was not selected. After reading these rivetingaccounts and talking with other Army nurses, I think I was blessed because no onereturns the same. The authors did an outstanding writing of important narratives.

Very interesting book, highly recommend for those nurses or medics who are about to deploy or have deployed these past 10+ years. By learning from others experiences, future deployers will be better prepared for the experiences and hardships of war. The book is very readable, fast paced and covers experiences of nurses in various roles and geographic settings. The authors did a wonderful job, both with their research and presentation of these nurses making them real to the reader! Sections by both Gen Stierle and Gen Rank were wonderful additions!!

Great book, I was in Afghanistan as a Nurse. Tells it like it is from a personal perspective of those who served.

Whether you're thinking about a career as a military nurse or just wanting to share in the experience this book book is a great read.

My son struggles with reading, but really enjoyed this book and it was a perfect reading level for him. He is in 7th grade. Held his interest very well.

Good short book (125 pages). A good short summary of the life of Ghengis Kahn. Good read for all ages from Grade 8 on up.

Easy read for ages 10-12. My son used it for a book report and enjoyed it immensely.

After watching Mongol my son had more questions on who this Genghis Khan person was. I was thrilled when I found this book, and the others in the series. He loved it!! He loves history anyway, but he enjoyed this book and learned a lot. Also got him the Ivan the Terrible book and he showed empthay towards ole Ivan and blamed his terrible-ness on his terrible childhood! If you have a young one in your life that loves history - especially the gorier parts - check out this series.

I gave this book as a gift to a member who was elected Secretary in our organization. She had never taken the minutes of a meeting before so I thought she could benefit from the information contained in this book. She was very happy to receive it and has done a fine job as Secretary this year. I think her performance speaks better than I could about the value of this book.

This book is proof of the old adage that good things come in small packages. The information provided for the notetaker at meetings is so useful! It includes not just tips on how to take notes, but also how to schedule meetings, keep track of who is (and is not) attending, keeping in touch with the meeting chairperson, and lots of other information that make taking minutes so much easier! I highly recommend this for anyone who gets tapped for taking minutes, scheduling meetings, setting agendas, etc.

Easy to use. When the minutes have to abide by Roberts' Rules of Order sometimes I have problems. However not that I can deal with them.

I learned good tips on writing and editing my meeting notes from this book. I used to write everything I hear in meetings but the book taught me how to organize my notes, weed out extra words and combine tidbits of information to make a coherent report. I recommend this book.

Very informative with tricks of the skill

I was able to quick assimilate this information and use it in my current job. The book structure is well organized and the examples allow one to quick understand the different topics. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to improve meeting minutes in their organization.

This is a wonderful little book, however the content is from the UK and some of the verbiage is not relevent to the US. I have this on my desk as a reference only, but I would recommend it to others.
