I love Lynn Ross's book about hand weaving. After picking it up and putting it down, I find I have to come back to it again and again just to remember why these silly threads mean something more to me than just bits and pieces of flotsam. Something solid weighs in among the words and illustrations of her book. It is almost as if each thread tells a story and each piece of weaving has a family history. I appreciate the fact that I may never be able to make anything as beautiful as a piece of clothing, but even a simple wall hanging encourages me to remember my OWN story in thread. Thank you, Lynn Ross, for encouraging your readers and students to tell our own tales.

Maybe there's some real gold in the hills; just a pity he decided to drown it in a morass of incomprehensible turgidity.It needs someone like Richard Feynman to translate it from gobbledegook into English in which case the whole book might be boiled down to a few pages.Here's a sample of the kind of nonsense you will have to deal with, sentence after sentence: "In math terms, we've seen that this flow of optimal self-organization has five features, which spell out the word FACES: Flexibility, Adaptability, Coherence (functioning well over time, or resilience), Energy (a sense of vitality) and Stability."Now just in case you're wondering, there's been no math so we haven't "seen" anything in "math terms" prior to this sentence. Furthermore, the use of a acronym that spells a word that servers no actual purpose in subsequent text but now requires additional explanation of the terms is just being "clever" for its own sake. Why not just say "resilience", instead of "coherence" and then having to explain he actually means "resilience"? Because then he wouldn't have his "clever" acronym FACES...Here's more: "Studies of well-being have found that the best predictor of health and happiness is having an integrated brain, what the researcher's call an "interconnected connectome"". Really? Citation? Guess which researcher has "found" this? You got it, Dan Siegel. How he found it, who knows; maybe it came to him in the shower. What research has shown is that there is an association between poor connectivity in the connectome and Alzheimer's disease, but that hardly the same thing as what he is claiming in that sentence. The book contains no references or bibliography, and just refers the reader to a link where this material is supposed to be, but following that link returns a 404 not found error. Which more or less describes the value I got from this book.Frankly, I suspect Siegel is thriving in this "post-fact" world we're now in, where you now have license to just make stuff up.I could go on but now I'm starting to get annoyed.

I would hesitate to recommend this book to most folks frequenting a library, unless they have a medical or scientific background. Still reading. I was really interested in this subject, but this book is a very difficult read. And I love technical books and I'm a technical writer. Biggest hurdle is the excessive use of acronyms. There are just too many to remember if you are new to this material. Makes me continuously look up acronyms while reading the drab writing style. Since this is from Microsoft, I guess this is the best source for the defacto-standard details. If I can find a better put-together book, I would read that first and use this as reference.The current question is how much does this apply to windows 10. Is a book revision needed??

I use this book mostly as a reference. If you are writing Windows WDM drivers, the book is very helpful and will save you time.

The content is outdated and needs to be updated.

This book may very well describe writing WDF drivers, but it is not necessarily a useful book. It is not the Windows equivalent of the one Writing Linux Device Drivers book, and even that book is only just so useful. First: User-mode drivers are described, but what good are they? They can't do a _lot_ of things, and they are source-code incompatible with kernel-mode drivers. Second: In the book's Forward, a Microsoft "Architect" mentions that 3rd party driver developers find the pre-WDF Windows driver model "complex and difficult to use". Unfortunately neither WDF nor this book has helped me debug real world issues involving Cardbus, inf/driver install failures, and NDIS API failures. Microsoft did _not_ address/document/fix the known "complex and difficult to use" problem.

It is very good for a beginner to WDF. I mean it starts from the very beginning introducing you to driver development concepts.

A great disappointment, nothing new compared to what is on MSDN.What is needed are simpler examples to start with, not hundred of pages of references: what are the bare necessities (I insist bare) to write a UMDF Filter driver (the simplest one) for a very basic device these days : a USB device. And there let's take an every day device (who has this FX2 stuff???) : a USB stick!Also no answers as to what this UMDF Filter driver can do (can it do standard I/O like fprintf ?).

for those do not have previous driver dev. experience. Too much documentation style "teaching" without a step-by-step practicing process.

I found this book well organized and useful for learning the Windows Driver Foundation. This book, however, is not a complete book for learning Windows Driver Development. Unfortunately, the book makes the claim that it is for newbies. This cannot be the case, because it doesn't give much in-depth information about Windows driver and kernel concepts, such as how memory is described (Neither I/O, buffered I/O or MDL's), different execution contexts, IRQL levels and what can and cannot be done in these levels, and basic IRP and I/O Manager concepts. Beginners will still have to start by learning WDM from a book like "Programming the Windows Driver Model". You just can't expect to succeed using WDF if you don't first have a firm grasp on WDM.I think this book provides an organized approach to learning WDF. It is, however, not a book for leaning Windows driver development basics. I actually thought the book read very well and I'm not a fast reader at all.

Many historical mysteries are very lopsided affairs. They're either historical data dumps with page after page of exposition or stories that would fit well in modern day save for a reference or two to tunics instead of shirts. Not only does the author balance those well, but there's actual mystery, interesting characters and believable tension in the story.The characters were nicely done. Each had enough of a personality to be remembered through the book without any of them being over-the-top. There wasn't any "Wait, who's that again?" when various characters were considered as suspects. Sir Faucon, the main character, is a bit of an Every Man, but the book sprinkles details through the book that keep him from being generic. Edmund the monk, his sidekick, is rather disagreeable but is slowly humanized through the book. Readers may not like him even by the end of the book but, like the main character, may come to appreciate his good points.One of the things I particularly appreciated was how everything fit together. The murder didn't occur in a void. It was the result of multiple events and circumstances that came together to bring things to a head. There was too much pressure for things to continue in that village indefinitely. The murder was simply one of the most likely outcomes given all that had happened and all that was going on.For those who enjoy politics, there is some in the book as well. And for those who hate politics, don't worry. It's handled with a light touch, none of the "I know that you know that I know therefore ... " silliness. There are a few small political skirmishes in the book with the promise of more to come, but they add flavor and realism instead of overwhelming the plot.In short, it's solid writing with a great plot and good characters. I look forward to reading more in the series.

This novel's greatest asset is its fine description of medieval village life. As an equal fan of history and mystery, I enjoyed this aspect of the book. Other aspects were generally mediocre. Characterizations are shallow, and the mystery plot is so involved as to strain credibility. The author also earns a demerit for lack of originality by involving a herbalist monk in the solution of the mystery. This character is a blatant, though pale, imitation of Ellis Peters superb Brother Cadfael. Apparently this author's other series novels are steamy medieval romances, a genre I shudder to even imagine. As a reader who loathes romance, I'm grateful to her for refraining from introducing any romance elements into this novel. Lukewarm though I am to the mystery side of this book, I will read further in this series simply to see more of its well-executed evocation of medieval society.

This is a good start to what might well be an excellent series.Sir Faucon de Remis, a Norman knight, is a returned Crusader after fighting in the Holy Land with King Richard I. As a landless knight, he needs a way to make his living and is persuaded by his uncle, Bishop William, to accept the office of “Keeper of the Pleas”, or Crowner as they were commonly called, a newly-created position intended to curb the rapacity of the Sheriffs, and ensure the Crown received all monies, taxes, and revenues that was its due. The clerk assigned to assist him is Brother Edmund, a Benedictine monk well-versed in the law, who is an officious and unlikeable man.Their first case is the death of a miller and it is fascinating to be part of the investigation as they learn step-by-step what is involved and how far the power of a crowner reaches. As a former soldier Crowner Faucon is familiar with death, but not so familiar with the subtle differences between a natural death by drowning and murder. Coincidentally, Brother Colin, an herbalist, is there to give advice to the new Crowner on how to tell the difference. This is fiction and I don’t find this coincidence too hard to swallow, and, let’s face it, Sir Faucon had to be educated somehow or else there would have been no story!I have read a number of mediaeval series so I am familiar with the terms and customs, and this author does justice to the setting and lifestyle of the period. Clothing is described in detail where appropriate to the story and there are some lovely descriptive passages, especially when Sir Faucon first sees the Priory of Radegund.The characters are fleshed out enough so that the reader can remember who each one is, and also form an opinion of them. The dialogue is natural and the prose is well-written and edited, with no glaring errors that I saw. There is also a good mystery, and the solving of it is done in a believable way. Brother Edmund slowly undergoes a personality change and I think I will enjoy reading more about this pair. The story is book-ended by a delusional child-killer (the killing is not described) that seems to have no place, but must have a purpose that will become evident in future books.

He ends up taking her along on the trip back to Germania. but things aren’t to turn out as he expected.I was really disappointed with this cover. Atretes is described as the most handsome man anyone had ever seen, but I didn’t find this true on the cover. Surely the graphic artist could have come up with a better picture than this. I’d liked him in the other books, as he struggled to survive. However, he is so cruel, unyielding, and contentious here, I didn’t like him at all. In fact, he made a better villain than hero. I could understand some of this, but I think it was overdone. The head-hopping continued, and I didn’t need the recounting of the entire Bible. A little would have sufficed, because I wanted to get on with the story. I was also disappointed with the ending here. It ended somewhat happily, but there was little emotion to satisfy the reader. Again, the last sentences just told what would happen in the future. However, I would still say the series as a whole is wonderful.

I stumbled across this series almost 20 years ago, and I am still reading them to this day, this book especially. I have read the first two at least a hundred times, but Atretes and Rizpah's story is just so particularly beautiful, and I have read it at least an additional fifty times on top of the others. There is so much anger in Atretes, and the way that he slowly comes around to peace and God really is just beautiful. More than that though, the story is just so haunting and captivating.The fear of the unknown, the struggle with temptation, the danger offered by Rome, and those who would see Atretes back in the arena. I also am just heartbroken each time as it is made clear over and over that actions have consequences. Nobody gets off unscathed, least of all those who make decisions outside of God's will.I read this book again just the other day, and there is a very good chance that I'll still be reading it 30 years from now. It is a timeless masterpiece of struggle and love, and it was just so beautifully written!

Wow. I just finished this one, #3 of the trilogy. Although each of the books could stand alone, I was enriched by beginning with the 1st and going all the way through the series in order. I have a new appreciation of the brutality and horror of the gladitorial arenas and the torturous training endured to be able to fight in them. Counterbalancing all that was the sweet acceptance and gentle love offered by a former slave girl who served the superficial, pleasure-seeking Julia. I was enriched by the stories of all the characters.

Rivers completes her Mark of the Lion trilogy by further developing the character of Atretes who was pivotal in the life of Julia in book 2. Like the first two in the series, the historical setting of ancient Rome and its surrounding regions is vivid and engaging. Against this backdrop, freed gladiator Atretes seeks to set up an elaborate home for his beloved Julia only to find nothing but betrayal. Into his subsequent depression and mounting anger arrives gentle Rizpah and her fatherless child. The path that follows takes these very different people into the wilds of Germania on a quest for home, hope, and happiness in a way that will leave the reader satisfied.

This series as a whole is 5 stars for me. This book picks up with Atretes where we left him in the first book. The events happen pretty much in parallel to the events of the 2nd book so we get no further updates on Hadassah and Marcus. There are so many moments in this book I love. Many times Atretes and Rizpah reminded me of Beast and Belle, especially the scenes in the beginning in Atretes villa. It was emotional and comical at the same time. I thought that the last quarter of the book ran a little slow and then the climax and resolution seemed a little rushed. I didn't have the same heart wrenching emotions at the end of this book as I did with the first two, but I still really enjoyed and appreciated this story and the characters' development. This series is powerful and beautiful and I enjoyed the journey. It has made me reflect on my relationship with Christ and I thank Francine Rivers for that.

I'm in total awe of this incredible novel/series that spoke the "true gospel of Christ-love and gentleness". Basically, spreading the "Good News of Jesus Christ". If you listen to a person who knows Christ yet walk away feeling like your sins are more the issue, that person doesn't know God's true message of His love and Him for that matter.This author leaves me in such wonder and whether you're a man or woman, Christian or not, there is something there for everybody in these three books. If you are to "take a break from the three, my advice is read 1&2 back to back and a couple of days for the third one). You'll loose out on details.It's not based religious rhetoric or fear (opposite) and especially fire and brim stone, but about the true message of "how" to live in this world with morals and if you are a Christian, the Way! Great wisdom to be had for people who seek to understand the Bible better, love stories and marriage realities not typically found in any book. Further,this particular book may help men in manhood and women who struggle with men they love who are struggling with pride. Balance in love, not torture, but great delight.I loved this series greater than anything I have ever read and I have read not just "Christian "books. Mainly, literary.I'll be the first to admit that the Christian market needs help in the name of interesting books. You will not be lacking that in this series! Personally, I'm tired of The Amish, knitting Christian novels lacking vocabulary or higher intellectual writing and thought. However, this book/series will brand your mind long after the pages have been closed. Sadly because it's over!
