Each time we drive the two hours to Vermont for a day visit, a weekend or longer, this guide rides with us. I think that Barbara and Roger Stillman won me over with the six "zones" they created to divide the state into regions for a vacationer. Other attemps at dividing the state have not been done as usefully or simply.We recently centered a six day visit in Rutland, part of the what the Stillman's call the "Middle West Vermont" zone. From there we found a trip to Fort Ticonderoga in New York, a visit to Burlington and golf outings in Killington all to be about an hour or less from our "headquarters" in Rutland. It's this kind of planning that makes vacationing fun. We had primary plans and secondary plans ready if the weather turned on us. Luckily we only endured one day of rain and that was perfect for our "shopping" day at selected book shops and antique shops. This guide lets you plan for that.On another trip our visit further north took us to the infamous Smuggler's Notch, where we tested our driving skill, and the limits of our automobile during the fringe season, prior to the road being closed for the season. The regular travel guides won't be helpful in getting ready for that kind of adventure. The guide is good for bed and breakfasts, but you should know that there are many other accommodations available other than those listed here. But, that's not the focus of this guide. This guide is to get you away from the standard and traditional and onto the off-beat and off-track. Try it, you'll like it.

While this was generally a good reference, we found some errors that proved to be costly in time, such as a wrong address that led us to the wrong end of town, and too late then to see the original Tiffany windows we were looking for. Also, the text is arranged in counties, but there is no map on the county page to know just where that county was, so we didn't know if we were in the area or not. Poorly arranged.

I bought this book for a friend retiring to Virginia, and it is a lot of interesting sites, organized by area, that one might overlook if just going by the maps.He is looking forward to getting to know his new area, and this appears to be a good addition to his guide books and information.

The JavaScript sections of this book are absolutely terrible. The code rarely works, and it jumps into concepts and functions that have an intermediate degree of difficulty. If you're a beginner, it takes you from zero to 60 without a second to take a breath in between. Just try the coding examples in the JavaScript chapters (9 through 12) and you will see that they do not work. Tough to figure out how to actually LEARN JavaScript when the code you're instructed to use isn't working. How can you figure out what is right or wrong? As a result, I've had to jump outside of the book and develop my own lines of code to execute what the book wanted me to for certain assignments. I guess I'm learning, but man, it's frustrating when you get to a new chapter and the code simply does not work!On top of that, many of the code examples differ completely from what the images show. Even my instructor noted this and said that we should be coding directly from the images themselves, rather than the code examples. Terrible, terrible proofreading and editing went into this as a whole, and I would NOT recommend this as a valid learning tool. It was somewhat fine in the beginning, but then went from "beginner" to "intermediate/advanced" once you hit the JavaScript sections.If you've been assigned this textbook, all I have to say is good luck - you'll need it!

This book is a requirement for a class I'm taking as an elective. I have learned most of what the book is teaching prior to taking this class through online video tutorials. The book teaches you the basics & fundamentals. It is geared towards beginners and does a nice job of slowly walking you through everything so it is not overwhelming. However, it is extremely overpriced! At the time of writing this review the book is sold for $95.If you are interested in learning web development, there are much better options for you out there. There are a ton of online video tutorials and sites that do a much better job of teaching you this material. Most are free and if you do decide to spend some money on a membership site (that offers better tutorials or the ability to have your code reviewed and ask questions) you will spend much less than $95Buy this book if you have to. If not look for something else

This book is terrible. Code is executed in snippets at a time, with no "before" and "after" comparisons. It has no valuable reference material, the JavaScript section goes from no experience to expecting you to debug code (not a good way), and it seems like JavaScript was just thrown in at the end so they could meet some curriculum requirement.Stay away if at all possible, this book is one of the worst written I've -EVER- seen.

This book is good for entry level learning of html5. I did not know a single thing about html before I took the course I needed this book for, and now I definitely like it and understand it. It's not bad. I rented it and it came fast with my amazon student prime membership. The condition was good/fair.

I bought the Kindle version of this book and it's pathetic; the pages that you rely on for examples to see how the code should look are EXTREMELY BLURRY! There is also a severe flaw on pages 432 and 433 that will ruin the project for chapter 9...be sure to point that out to your teacher.

Very expensive text for a web development class I'm taking. Some material is inaccurate. Redundant at points. Odd to have CSS brought in before basics of HTML are covered. If you have vision problems beware that code examples are in a very small font.

This textbook has a good overview of many web development aspects, but it's not earth shattering. It covers a broad spectrum of topics, so information does not get overly detailed.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti will be one hundred years old this month. He is a Navy veteran, poet, activist, leftist, publisher, and a book store owner. San Francisco in the 1950s was a place of change. Old conservatives and the Beat movement clashed. Ferlinghetti's City Lights bookstore became a hangout for the hipster crowd. One of the group was Allen Ginsberg. Among the paperbacks the bookstore was offering was the self-published Pocket Poets featuring Beat poets. One such copy would bring a great deal of notoriety to Ferlinghetti, City Lights, Ginsberg, and the First Amendment.The Howl and other Poems was the centerpiece of a San Francisco obscenity trial in 1957. Ferlinghetti, as the publisher, was arrested. The trial, although it seems incredible that poetry would be censored in America of all places, would become a fantastic victory for free speech. It could have easily gone the other way. Judge Horn was a Sunday school teacher who sentenced five shoplifters to watch the movie The Ten Commandments and write the lesson they learned about stealing. He would hardly be a choice judge for the defense that chose trial without a jury. The parts of the expert testimony and questioning are included in the book as well as a tremendous amount of documentation, background information, and interviews after the fact. The trial played out more like a trial about free speech than against Ferlinghetti. Neither Ferlinghetti nor Ginsberg testified.The authors Ronald K. L. Collins and David Skover both are experts qualified to dissect the case. Collins is the co-director of the History Book Festival. He was the Harold S. Shefelman Scholar at the University of Washington School of Law, and from 2002 to 2009, a scholar at the Newseum's First Amendment Center. Skover is the Fredric C. Tausend Professor of Law at the Seattle University School of Law. He teaches, writes, and lectures in the fields of federal constitutional law, federal courts, free speech & the internet, and mass communications theory.The trial, however, did not end the case. The judge did a commendable job of separating his personal beliefs from case law, and although the book was allowed, reading it on air became another fight. The use of some language is not permissible by the FCC. That fight is ongoing. WBIA (New York) wanted to air The Howl for the fiftieth anniversary of the San Francisco decision. The station backed down fearing a four million dollar fine. It posted the poem on its web page instead. The poem was, however, aired in the 1950s on public radio without any backlash. This book reminds the reader that poetry, and speech in general, can still be regulated in a free country and it is still something that is feared by society and governments. Poetry remains a social force and a weapon that some would like to see banished if it does not conform to their beliefs. Poets still stand up and speak; Publishers, like Ferlinghetti, will still publish. Resist.
