Review

“This book inspires as it delights. Estelle Frankel’s graceful and authoritative voice--fluent and informed as it seamlessly weaves together religion, psychoanalytic theory, literature, philosophy and modern science—recasts the ‘unknown’ from, a situation of dread to an invitation to ever more liberating awareness.”—Sylvia Boorstein, author of Happiness is an Inside Job: Practicing for a Joyful Life “Drawing on insights from the Jewish mystical tradition, as well as Buddhism and psychoanalysis, Estelle Frankel demonstrates the surprisingly positive value of ‘not knowing.’ This book is profound and clear. It will enable you to become more intimate with your own experience, to overcome fear, and to overcome the mental and emotional challenges of daily life.”—Daniel Matt, author of The Essential Kabbalah, God and the Big Bang, and The Zohar: Pritzker Edition “This book bristles with depth and insight, practical stories, and humor as Estelle Frankel takes us on a deep and necessary journey into the via negativa, the land of unknowing. She urges us in a time of darkness and uncertainty to learn from the dark and to grow our courage and our creativity in the process.”—Rev Dr. Matthew Fox, author of A Way to God "As Americans leave traditional faiths, publishers release books to give them alternatives...In The Wisdom of Not Knowing, Estelle Frankel--a therapist who also teaches Jewish mysticism--proposes that psychological, emotional, and spiritual health depend on accepting how much in life cannot be known, and that it is important to have the courage to face uncertainty and ambiguity...."—Publishers Weekly "...As she demonstrated in Sacred Therapy, Frankel is a masterful meaning-maker. She skillfully marshals ideas and values from mystical Judaism and psychotherapy and then launches into astonishing intimations of the spiritual maturity that comes with quests, creativity, darkness, questions, and open-mindedness...."—Spirituality & Practice "Frankel's path to embracing uncertainty has a certain resonance...."—Experience Life "Psychotherapist and spiritual advisor Estelle Frankel, in her book, The Wisdom of Not Knowing, explores the power of the unknown to be friend rather than foe..."—Beliefnet

From the Back Cover

For most of us the unknown is both friend and foe. At times it can be a source of paralyzing fear and uncertainty, and at other times it can be a starting point for transformation, creativity, and growth. The unknown is a deep current that runs throughout all religions and mystical traditions, and it is also the nexus of contemporary psychotherapeutic thought and practice and a key element in all personal growth and healing. In The Wisdom of Not Knowing, psychotherapist Estelle Frankel shows us that our psychological, emotional, and spiritual health is radically influenced by how comfortable we are at navigating the unknown and uncertain dimensions of our lives.Drawing on insights from Kabbalah, depth psychology, Buddhism, Christianity,Hinduism, and ancient myth, Frankel explores how we can grow our souls by tapping into the wisdom of not knowing. She also includes case studies of individuals who have grappled with their fears of the unknown and, as a result, have come out wiser, stronger, and more resilient. Each chapter includes experiential exercises and/or meditations for befriending the unknown. These exercises help convey how we must be willing to "not know" in order to gain knowledge and be able to bear uncertainty so we can be free to enjoy a healthy sense of adventure and curiosity.

I was drawn to this book by its title. For a long time, I have been interested in the Capacity to Not Know, first as a psychotherapy research tool and second as an important way to approach the mystery of death. I have been disappointed in the past by titles that promise one thing and then deliver something quite different, a literary bait and switch, as it were. The author provides the examples and amplifications of the wisdom of not knowing in the form of stories from Jewish mysticism, Zen, and her personal life as well as the lives of her patients. Estelle writes in a simple lyrical style. Reading the book and reflecting on the wisdom it contains is a real pleasure.Seth Isaiah Rubin, Ph.DClinical Psychologist and Jungian Analyst

As a teacher of Jewish mindfulness, this book is the book that you turn to again and again for both inspiration and ideas. Drawing from rich and varied Jewish sources, the author offers accessible and penetrating teachings and stories with which to either acquaint oneself with the concept of not-knowing or to delve more deepky into it. You do not have to be Jewish to engage with this book. On the contrary, for those who practice mindfulness through the lens of a different faith or even no faith tradition, the timelessness of the book's ideas will resonate.

The author's style makes you feel like your wisest friend is sitting across the kitchen table over tea, telling you inspiring stories, making you think profoundly, and opening a hidden window to the light.

Beautifully written. Frankel advises one to step outside the box, to turn away from the status quo, give up on the cultural gloss and attend to the wondrous thing itself. Attend without explanation, except, as she affirms, that the mysteries you are left with are where you find God.I'm not sure I agree with that. But I loved reading her gorgeous prose, and I value the sense of authenticity and independence you can achieve by "not knowing."

In this inspiring book, Estelle Frankel invites the reader to open his soul to curiosity and release his fear in the face of the inevitable uncertainties of life. With courage and persistent intention, we can override the human tendency to anticipate the worst and move forward with the creative and joyous possibilities inherent in the unknown and live richer lives. Frankel draws from the mystical wisdom of so many spiritual traditions as well as from her deep understanding of human psychology to inspire us to live lives that are increasingly expansive and to grow more fully into who we are meant to be. It was a great joy to read this book and to have it to re-read as the spirit calls.

An inspired and inspiring book that beautifully weaves together Frankel's own deep wisdom and wide experience with the wisdom of psychology, Jewish mysticism, Buddhism, literature, philosophy, and her clients. Frankel lovingly reminds us that life and divinity are a mystery beyond the grasp of the human mind and that we should learn to live compassionately and wisely with our doubts, uncertainties and insecurities. Though we cannot comprehend the Ineffable, we can still lovingly connect with it and live our lives in alignment with the Source of our being, however we choose to name or conceptualize that ultimate Reality. Frankel offers lots of powerful practices to get us out of our busy, buzzy minds and into our senses and intuition so that we can have a more vital and real experience of life and so that we can make good, even holy, choices based on the highest forms of knowing that we are capable of. This is not a book whose message is "Life is uncertain, so grimly bear it and slog through it." Rather, this is a deeply spiritual, hopeful and uplifting book that gives us proven methods for connecting with the Great Mystery and living a life that simultaneously helps mend the soul and heal the world. Joy, not despair, can emerge from a life so lived! The book implicitly encourages us to stop wasting time arguing with and killing one another over whose concepts of God are right. May we all learn to embrace and honor the mystery within and all around us, to lessen our clutch on rigid beliefs, dogmas, and practices, to welcome openness, learning and creativity, to humbly hold our knowledge and insight and acknowledge that they are only partial and provisional, to value continual improvement over perfectionism, and to work together to build a better life on Earth for all beings!

I picked up this book thinking it could help a friend going through some health issues, but found myself drawn in by what it says about my own life. I'm just on Chapter 4, but in these early chapters Ms. Frankel asks us to re-evaluate our patterns of clinging to past experience--what we "know"-- especially when we believe they should predict the future. The combination of her scholarly understanding across a number of disciplines and intimate writing style just knocks me out. It really feels like she's holding my hand as we take some scary steps of self-discovery together.

This book is truly a gem. If you are looking for something to uplift you this book will allow you that experience. It gave me the confidence to navigate the unknown in my life. It is beautifully written and conceived. It is not written for followers of any specific religion or spiritual tradition. Anyone with an open mind and an open heart can learn from Estelle Frankel's wisdom teachings. I whole-heartedly agree with her when she says, "this book challenges us to widen our arc of possibilities by increasing our tolerance for the unknown and uncertain." Thank you Estelle for your generous gift of insights. Thank you also for making me a little brave into facing the unknowns in my life.
