Don't buy this if you already have Rick Steves Germany book. I thought this would have information about Salzburg that would not be in the Germany book, but FYI, everything in this book is echoed in the Germany book. ONLY buy this if you will not be visiting the rest of Germany or Austria and are going to focus your visit on Munich and Salzburg - otherwise just get the more comprehensive book.
Mr. Rick Steves I really hope you read this review! But I bought 3 of your books and it made our 1 year anniversary trip the absolute best!!! I loved the restaurants and tips you gave! Buy the book just for your own personal concierge and you’ll get an amazing ROI. We didn’t even know the Louvre would be free on the first Sunday of the month until we read it and that of itself made the books essentially free! Even with google maps-you can’t quite figure out what is closest to you or make a “route†of action so the map on the book was amazing to have. This was my second time to several of these cities, but I hadn’t been in 10 years and everything was different. I loved it so much!!!So, to the important information. The books are small and make sure to buy the current version so the recommendations are relevant. The book is organized well with some opening tips in the introduction. It will rank best things to see and I agree with the rankings. Maybe read this before you get to the city. Then it goes into a tour of the city or other tours of museums and such. I downloaded the audio book app, but my husband and I enjoyed just skimming it and we’re trying to be less attached to our phone. The tour section gave Great info and background on what you’re seeing. My favorite is that he gives the history of the city!!! Very great refresher if you’re trying to remember which HBO/showtime series were when and where in the cities (like the Tudors)! Jk but still helpful. We paid for a few tours so we didn’t have to mess with paying for transportation and making our own itinerary because we had limited time (and the means). But reading Rick Steves’ tours have us a base to better enjoy our paid tours. Then it touches on some sights. Same great info. Next is sleeping, I wish I had bought the boom before we planned hotels-we thought we did good research but we obviously didn’t on a few occasions. Then it goes to eating. FANTASTIC RECOMMENDATIONS with useful information to pick what you want. They are listed by what area of town you are in which is very helpful. *Rick- I would like you to rank local cuisine foods with your triangle system as well. And I think you need to include “nightlife/bars/pubs/happy hours†which he kind of does but it is not a separate section/color by area. And a list of popular local drinks, breweries, etc. I know that won’t appeal to everyone, but I would have liked some expert advice on those things. Last are practicalities which was an excellent resource. Helps with transport and just general things you should know. And it has some common phrases in each language-definite life saver! And then you get and EXCELLENT fold out map.Book is small and light weight (maybe the size of an 8x5 photo). Easy to fit in a back pack pocket (it even fit in my coat pocket). Good size font and easy to use as a resource. You’d be crazy not to buy this for your trip because it will pay off.Rick-if you’re ever up for a vacation together I bet you would be a blast!!!
For those of you who, like me travel on my own and don't like to "tour" with a group when in anew city, Rick Steve has a sensible useful guide for Munich with a side trip to Salzburg. It divides the city into sections and creates easy to follow "walks" that will enhance your experience. Although he likes to be on the cheaper side of what I like to do, you can take is recommendations and decide for yourself if you want to go that way or spend some more. I loved the fact that when you eat in a restaurant that he recommends if you show his guide to the owner you will either get a discount or a nice chat.
Just the right amount of information about city, sights, and history, easy to enjoy while out sightseeing, especially using the free companion audio walking tour app. Well organized and easy to search. Really glad this covers Neuschwanstein and Salzburg, too! We changed our itinerary on the fly to go visit them .We didn't use the hotel and restaurant recommendations this trip, but appreciate that they provide a range of prices.
We were visiting family in Milan and decided to take a quick weekend trip to Munich and Salzburg. This handy pocket guide was more than sufficient for our needs (we weren’t trying to do a ton of planning) and easy to take along on our travels. We arrived in Munich on Friday morning, visited Salzburg on Saturday, and flew out of Munich on Monday morning. This guide gave us the info to easily plan our trip, where to stay, and what to do. Well worth the money.
You'd need a pretty wide pocket to get this into your pocket, but the book is just what we needed.If you want a 400-page introduction, this isn't it. I scanned a table of contents below to show you what's here. The book is 7.5 oz, and measures 4.5 inches by 6 inches. It did not fit in my passport pouch or pocket.The info inside was absolutely what we needed: a couple paragraphs about each thing with good maps. I bought a paper copy because I wanted the fold-out map, but we ended up not unfolding it at all so the Kindle version would probably have done.It's an excellent book for what it promises to be.
Always enjoy his renditions with the down to earth comments interspersed with his guides. I have all of his Italy pocket guides that pertain to a trip I am making next year. Wish I had found his books years ago(if he was doing them when I traveled a lot) I really recommend these over the standard ones.
Had my first trip over to Europe and got this book to help with our trip. This had everything you needed to know. Having no experience in how to use public transportation, it shared where the stations were, how to get to places and what type of ticket you needed. Also, extra information on sites that made me into a tour guide for my family. This is a must-have book to keep with you during your trip!
