About the Author
Cody McClain Brown teaches at the University of Zagreb. For four years he wrote a popular, weekly blog for Croatian Radio Television's the Voice of Croatia. In 2017 his first book Chasing a Croatian Girl was turned into a play by the Split Youth Theater. Croatia Strikes Back is his second book. He lives in Zagreb with his wife and daughter-- his mother-in-law visits frequently.Â

If you read the author's first book ("Chasing a Croatian Girl"), this sequel is a natural "ther rest of the story". Not quite as funny as the first, there is a bit of disenchantment apparent. But then again, being an immigrant myself, I, too experienced that no matter where you came from, no matter where you moved to, you will always sit between two chairs: never quite belonging to the new country, but a stranger to your own because, as the author correctly states, life moves on, and even families grow apart if your reality is not their reality. I consider it a "must read" for all who think about moving to Croatia (or, for that matter, to any other place not their country of birth and upbringing).
Great storyteller.
As we are about to move to Croatia after having visited many times over the past 15 years, we find this book very insightful. In many instances we saw ourselves and our Croatian friends. he has captured the core of the Croatian nature.
This book is hysterical! A real life look at what it means to be part of a Croatian family and live in Croatia when you yourself are not a Croat! I am savoring every page!!
Great book
Cody McClain Brown's first book, Chasing a Croatian Girl (which I read in both English and remarkably well-translated Croatian versions), reveals an unusually perceptive though still somewhat reluctant participant in the rituals of the culture he is discovering. It is thoroughly entertaining and masterfully written. Croatia Strikes Back is billed as a sequel, but it is more serious (although an equally fun read) and delves deep into understanding the differences between the Croatian and American cultures. What is remarkable about it is that Cody's observations as an American in Croatia completely coincide with the way many of us Croats in America see both cultures. So how you see the world is not all about where you are from, as we've been told time and time again. If you are a transplant and feel at least a bit out of place in your new environment, read this book and you'll understand what you are missing, why you are longing for it, and what drives you toward and away from each of those two cultures. Highly recommended!
Last year I went to Croatia for the first time. I stayed with friends. They were warm and gracious, very Croatian. When I left they gave me “Chasing the Croatian Girl†and I laughed 😂 the whole flight home. This year I went back. I had a wonderful time and when I went to leave they gave me “Croatia Strikes Back†and I laughed all the way home. I did everything wrong, and yet my Croatian friends invited me back again next year. These books are terrific. They are funny but more than that they are insightful. I learned so much about Croatia ðŸ‡ðŸ‡· and love it even more because of the knowledge. Dr. Brown is a good writer and great observer of people and the world around him. I highly recommend both books.
Never have such keen observations about life in Croatia been written with such humor. This light and quick read was a joy (though the 2nd edition needs a copy-editing pass for small grammatical errors).
