I felt this was a very interesting book giving the viewpoint of a woman in a position of authority as the matron in a major hospital in Richmond, filled with men. Men who were patients, men who were surgeons, men who were their assistants, men who were cooks and all had to report to her. It was quite a position for this Southern woman. Her accounts of dealing with disrespect and how she handled it even going so far as to cooking meals herself for the men in the wards. She not only had to counter prejudice because of being a woman, but also because she was Jewish. She proved herself by her stalwart determination to set the hospital in order, even taking charge of the whiskey barrel. Whiskey meant for use as a stimulant and given to patients suffering pain from their injuries, many nearing death, was often drained quickly by the surgeons and other men in authority. This was unacceptable to her. Not caring who it offended, she locked the barrel in her tiny quarters and kept the key on her person. You can imagine the uproar that caused. Met with anger and contempt, she stood her ground and eventually earned their respect and admiration. I've read many books on the civil war and reconstruction and have never read one yet that so aptly describes the evacuation of Richmond at the end of the war. It is riveting and shows her true strength. If you watched or read "Mercy Street" and enjoyed it, you will enjoy this book. Four stars instead of five because there are several chapters that seem to drag on a bit. However, since it is from her own journal and not a novel, you really can't fault her for it. I recommend this book.

It's a solid read for those interested in how things really working during the war. There's no flowery writing here. It's put forward in a straight, no-nonsense manner and offers an intriguing look behind the scenes of hospital life. She doesn't focus a lot on individual patients and that's fine, other books do that. I bought it for a bit of research and wound up reading it all the way through because it held my interest.

This read provided a different example of life and the everyday situations in a Richmond hospital attempting to provide succor to injured Civil War soldiers. Due to the Confederacy's lack of financing and medical supplies, there was little more than comfort that could be given to patients. Provisions being scarce, this hospital matron made every effort to provide requested food to those in her charge. One also gets a sampling of the style of speaking at that time. A historian would be more likely to want to read this.

Solid historical read and good Kindle formatting. I started reading this in connection with one of my classes and it is really very good. Phoebe Yates Pember's story is an engaging one, and she writes it well.

This is a book I would love to read. This woman's story deserves to be known and can provide a look into the war between the states that is not often considered. However, the copy I received had many missing pages, blank pages leaving leaving gaps in the author's work. Certainly not the fault of the real life heroine!

The rating is given because it is written in an old fashioned way of talking making it hard to follow. The best thing about this book is that it is short. The story does inform the life of a woman taking care of the troops and her life after the war.

If you love Civil War history, this book is a must read! If this book had been 1000 pages if this book had been 1000 pages it still would not have been enough!

An interesting read about a little known person. Very informative and well written.

True Stories of World War II (Stories of War)

From School Library Journal

Gr 4-6-The heavy dependence on fictionalized content or unattributed information in this collection of profiles begs the question as to why the individuals are mentioned at all when so many licenses were taken with their actual stories. Attracting reluctant readers to history via a graphic-novel format has merit, but fictionalization for effect is a risky bet, and it's one these titles lose. A list of pages containing verified quotations is hidden at the front of three of the books; World War II contains no confirmed quotation notes. The illustrations vary from volume to volume, but are full of action and engaging. Despite a brief summary of the war, a time line, and a map as well as back matter, these books aren't appropriate for reports, and even browsers, especially the less sophisticated ones, need a preface explaining the purpose fictionalization serves.α(c) Copyright 2011. This was very interesting and it had a lot of information inside it. This is a 31-page graphic novel, containing 6 chapters. Five of those chapters hold true stories of individuals who served during WWII. The author includes in this novel a glossary, an index, and a separate page where he listed books and internet websites where you could also go for more information on this topic. This graphic novel shows the war from many viewpoints. At the beginning of this graphic novel you get a brief overview of World War II with some key dates and a map. With each soldier’s graphic story, you get a small paragraph about the soldier and a portrait of them before their graphic account begins. Each story is different as one soldier shares their story of the Bataan Death March, another soldier was an Aviation Pioneer, one was a French Freedom Fighter, one shares their Disaster at Sea story and we also hear the story of the Flag Over Iwo Jima. No story is better than the other yet I think, as a reader some of these stories will affect you differently than others. I’m pretty sure at least one of these stories will hit upon your emotions. These stories were easy to follow and they typically covered 4-6 pages each. Gunfire does take place in this novel, this is war afterall, but I didn’t see anything overly graphic or overplayed in the novel. I thought the details in the illustrations were really good as they showed what needed to be shown and implied the rest. I liked the colors that were used inside this novel. Each story had its own shade of coloring, and none of them were bright. From Army Green to a blue-green to light tan, each story was unique.I think this is a good graphic novel for mature teen readers. This is history and teens need to hear these stories and learn from them.

Again, true stories of real, though not famous people who participated in the war. I found the stories a bit more interesting than the the Revolutionary War ones. Overall a decent series with some unique stories of real people taken from their actual diaries and letters.

...for anyone who is into Westerns, both on TV and in the movies and where they were produced!

If you want a quick primer on the history of of America's most famous non-Hollywood studio, this is it.In standard Arcadia style, the photos are well chosen, well reproduced, and the captions informative. And despite the limitations of that format, if you read them all you do get a clear history of the studio. The best amd most informative photos show the filming process, less useful are the shots of the stars just standing around. But they do remind us of many long-forgotten films and series.I found myself wishing that some of the productions were covered in greater detail, but 40 years on, many of the principals involved are no longer with us, so this is as much as we're likely to get.

Loved learning about the movie location!

I visited Old Tucson before getting the book and found it to be a good book with a history of how the studio came about.

100% Satisfied! Just as described.

Book was in like new condition, extremely happy with it!

I searched the internet including the Old Tucson web page to find out what didn't burn in the 1990's fire. I couldn't find anything until I found this book. It covers much of the growth over the years and the rebuild after the fire. It seems a shame that they didn't rebuild the notable land marks such as the old stage depot and the old sheriff office on the south end.

As I was accumulating tons of material for a project of my own on Old Tucson, I should have known Arcadia would eventually put something out there. After all, they've covered just about everything from Lone Pine, CA to my own hometown of Grand Rapids, MI. Bravo! A fine work long overdue.
