I felt this was a very interesting book giving the viewpoint of a woman in a position of authority as the matron in a major hospital in Richmond, filled with men. Men who were patients, men who were surgeons, men who were their assistants, men who were cooks and all had to report to her. It was quite a position for this Southern woman. Her accounts of dealing with disrespect and how she handled it even going so far as to cooking meals herself for the men in the wards. She not only had to counter prejudice because of being a woman, but also because she was Jewish. She proved herself by her stalwart determination to set the hospital in order, even taking charge of the whiskey barrel. Whiskey meant for use as a stimulant and given to patients suffering pain from their injuries, many nearing death, was often drained quickly by the surgeons and other men in authority. This was unacceptable to her. Not caring who it offended, she locked the barrel in her tiny quarters and kept the key on her person. You can imagine the uproar that caused. Met with anger and contempt, she stood her ground and eventually earned their respect and admiration. I've read many books on the civil war and reconstruction and have never read one yet that so aptly describes the evacuation of Richmond at the end of the war. It is riveting and shows her true strength. If you watched or read "Mercy Street" and enjoyed it, you will enjoy this book. Four stars instead of five because there are several chapters that seem to drag on a bit. However, since it is from her own journal and not a novel, you really can't fault her for it. I recommend this book.

It's a solid read for those interested in how things really working during the war. There's no flowery writing here. It's put forward in a straight, no-nonsense manner and offers an intriguing look behind the scenes of hospital life. She doesn't focus a lot on individual patients and that's fine, other books do that. I bought it for a bit of research and wound up reading it all the way through because it held my interest.

This read provided a different example of life and the everyday situations in a Richmond hospital attempting to provide succor to injured Civil War soldiers. Due to the Confederacy's lack of financing and medical supplies, there was little more than comfort that could be given to patients. Provisions being scarce, this hospital matron made every effort to provide requested food to those in her charge. One also gets a sampling of the style of speaking at that time. A historian would be more likely to want to read this.

Solid historical read and good Kindle formatting. I started reading this in connection with one of my classes and it is really very good. Phoebe Yates Pember's story is an engaging one, and she writes it well.

This is a book I would love to read. This woman's story deserves to be known and can provide a look into the war between the states that is not often considered. However, the copy I received had many missing pages, blank pages leaving leaving gaps in the author's work. Certainly not the fault of the real life heroine!

The rating is given because it is written in an old fashioned way of talking making it hard to follow. The best thing about this book is that it is short. The story does inform the life of a woman taking care of the troops and her life after the war.

If you love Civil War history, this book is a must read! If this book had been 1000 pages if this book had been 1000 pages it still would not have been enough!

An interesting read about a little known person. Very informative and well written.
